I expect to see all of you there at 7pm sharp on the 7th June, where there will be an exciting new book launched and some readings (including from me), music and a film.

@redshadegreen @DAaronovitch That’s true of everywhere, but no one would confuse China and Japan just because they have a root origin. And Europe’s separation from outside world is much less complicated

@tfromthemeadow @DAaronovitch Apart from Vladivostok being firmly in Asia by some 5000 miles, there are many Europes, not one monolith. Much of Europe’s identity and culture has been shaped from outside its borders.

This is the point at which you will be told two things: first from the cleverer xenophobes that it was never about the numbers but about the cultures. Second from the dimmer ones that these statistics are fiddled and only the worst possible statistics are to be believed.

NEW: Net migration has fallen to 171,000 in 2025- lowest level since 2021 and covid pandemic. Down from 944,000 peak in 2022-23. Use of asylum hotels down by a third since peak.

@redshadegreen @DAaronovitch I would accept the berbers (or whatever name they have for themselves I forget it) but second example not true although they are neighbours in a way the Chinese for example are not

@redshadegreen @DAaronovitch Not least because the choice to live in England vs France is nowhere near as obvious as say Madagascar vs France. But also because ‘immigration’ obviously means the people standing outside the train station, not the annual flow

@redshadegreen @DAaronovitch Arguing about whether there are too many ‘foreign’ Europeans here is a bit like saying ‘Devon is full of dfl’s now’ and so on. Not an equivalent issue

@DAaronovitch @redshadegreen I don’t think ‘there are too many foreign people’ is a particularly hard concept to understand Mr Aaronovitch, it seems heel draggers on this issue are looking at net immigration like it’s another line they need to (reluctantly) follow. 0.5 updated to 1%! What do you say to THAT!

@feuilletonopfer True south Londoners will tell you how it’s really their local club because it was in Woolwich until 1920 or something. Even in Kent disproportionate number of supporters to this day.

In the same way in which any exception to the rule allowed to persist longer than three days quietly settles in as “a permanent and valued fixture in our national life”, the arsenal shirt has now become business dress.

@mikloscsubak The marches of mitteleuropa. If I’m not mistaken the 500000000 was worth more than the 5000000000 at printing. I’m curious what would happen in a similar situation in a time/place where most people don’t have a cousin with a farm

@fleur_inverse /dark woke id say (with the obvious exception of antisemitism) Nazi Germany wasn’t really more racist than typical rw euro state or liberal eugenicists. Certainly the anti Slav stuff collapses very fast

@fleur_inverse They weren’t exactly hostile to North Africans either. Think quite a few went off to Egypt after the war and so on. The racial theories are all over the place once the war started (‘another missing tribe of goths in the Balkans!’). If I was being provocative

Fans of Hitler/Mussolini who insist that they actually loved nonwhites and wanted the best for them are a bit like the Muslims who say that they like and respect "Jesus" while rejecting His divinity.

@AndrewOrlowski I think some of this is when they run it through AI after, much as once upon a time people used ‘grammarly’ to error check (and made it worse doing so), but forget to prompt ‘point out but don’t correct’ or similar. But Spiked is terrible for this too, lots of pure GPT slop

Now would be a really bad time for Unherd to find out it has also been publishing “AI-assisted” articles. What do you make of this excerpt, dear mutuals? 🤔 from unherd.com/2025/05/the-st… see also: unherd.com/2025/07/the-se… His Substack is a Himalayan mountain range of slop: substack.com/home/post/p-17…

Everyone's focused on the Jamir Nazir story in the Granta / Commonwealth Prize controversy. But UnHerd's investigation, by Vincenzo Barney (@BarneysRubble0), into three other stories found signs of AI and odd online histories for the authors. unherd.com/2026/05/invasi…

@fleur_inverse @LustralBasin In good old Peire Vidal’s time there was still the playful politeness and mock deference but ultimately if it didn’t work out they were fair game and there are dozens if not hundreds of troubadour songs calling people slags

@fleur_inverse @LustralBasin This unfortunately was just the French, catholicised version of fin’amor which was originally about defending having lovers as long as they were young and generous and pretty

Chivalry (real chivalry, centered on heroism in battle and loyalty to brothers-in-arms) was co opted by the court of Aquitaine in the 1100s and has since been used as a tool to shame men into idealizing “love” as servile obedience to roasties. As well as shaming younger women

Not really in favour of porn and hookup culture, but there is a very feminine way of opposing them, invoking Romance, Chivalry, the troubadours ("erm, read Marcabru"), heart making boom due to a song written by a guy who had a miserable love life/offed himself. Let's go forward.
