Are any TV journalists involved in making proper, regular films about this by-election? Every TV news outlet should be there full time. I've often criticised fellow journalists for exaggerating the importance of an election, but it's hard to think of a bigger by-election ever

@DAaronovitch I’m hoping it’s just a one off this season. I don’t think I could take two victories.

People seem to find it very hard to be magnanimous in victory these days

@tfromthemeadow @DAaronovitch Apart from Vladivostok being firmly in Asia by some 5000 miles, there are many Europes, not one monolith. Much of Europe’s identity and culture has been shaped from outside its borders.

@redshadegreen @DAaronovitch Thank you for raising that valid point, France has too many foreign people too but French people are not foreign in England. There is one Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok including the diaspora on other continents

This is the point at which you will be told two things: first from the cleverer xenophobes that it was never about the numbers but about the cultures. Second from the dimmer ones that these statistics are fiddled and only the worst possible statistics are to be believed.

NEW: Net migration has fallen to 171,000 in 2025- lowest level since 2021 and covid pandemic. Down from 944,000 peak in 2022-23. Use of asylum hotels down by a third since peak.

@redshadegreen @DAaronovitch Not least because the choice to live in England vs France is nowhere near as obvious as say Madagascar vs France. But also because ‘immigration’ obviously means the people standing outside the train station, not the annual flow

Rather than a single stat, it would be nice if the so-called news presented it as an equation: X left; Y came in = Z Then the breakdown of each group. And then consistently use the same metric rather than choose a different one for their narrative. @UKDecline are very good at stuff like this.

246,000 Brits left last year. Net, 136,000 went. A city the size of Watford. Many are entrepreneurs, investors, small businesspeople. It’s the Starmer Exodus. Reform will Bring Brits Back.

@TorquilMacneil @DAaronovitch You must have been reading the Morning Star exclusively for the duration of his leadership because every other newspaper eviscerated him. And I wasn’t even a fan of him.

The problem of course is not conspiracist or racist or crazy posts on social media. It's what those posts tell you about the real thinking and attitudes of the people who made them. And if a political party seems to attract more than it's fair share of such people, it's fair to ask why

@TorquilMacneil @DAaronovitch Because the press gave Corbyn a free pass and never attacked him, whereas every indiscretion of Farage produces reams of newsprint, like Nathan Gill’s Russian connection. Oh wait!

@DAaronovitch What would constiute 'more than their fair share' given that five minutes ago Labour made Jeremy Corbyn its leader with Seamus Milne as his right hand man.

@tfromthemeadow @DAaronovitch Is it ‘too many foreign people’ you object to or just the type of foreign person. Does France, say, have too many foreign people?

@DAaronovitch @redshadegreen I don’t think ‘there are too many foreign people’ is a particularly hard concept to understand Mr Aaronovitch, it seems heel draggers on this issue are looking at net immigration like it’s another line they need to (reluctantly) follow. 0.5 updated to 1%! What do you say to THAT!

@DAaronovitch Of course, us thick plebs can't do arithmetic, so we aren't able to do basic subtraction to work out that s far more qualified and able Brits left the country due to Leftists policies, to be replaced by more rapey third-worlders. You see we can play games with language too.

@cyberistia That’s a really important point. In fact if they leave they would be paying more tax if they tried to dispose of their assets.

@prstskrzkrk Apparently I can use my Slovene residency card to skip the cue at Ljubljana airport. I’m not sure if it would work elsewhere.

@cyberistia This is a very partisan take (look at the programs he is on and who he reposts). UK GDP since 2016 has been about 6-7% and the EU area has been about 14-16%.
