@tfromthemeadow @DAaronovitch Apart from Vladivostok being firmly in Asia by some 5000 miles, there are many Europes, not one monolith. Much of Europe’s identity and culture has been shaped from outside its borders.

NEW: Net migration has fallen to 171,000 in 2025- lowest level since 2021 and covid pandemic. Down from 944,000 peak in 2022-23. Use of asylum hotels down by a third since peak.

Helped by increasing numbers of young Brits leaving the country. I think - at least from an assimilation point of view - we should measure gross not net. 20m people leaving and 19.9m arriving would not be a success story.

Rather than a single stat, it would be nice if the so-called news presented it as an equation:
X left; Y came in = Z
Then the breakdown of each group. And then consistently use the same metric rather than choose a different one for their narrative.

For a man who oversaw net migration of 685,000 whilst he was an immigration minister (and 1.2m inward migration in total), I’m not sure Robert Jenrick has any credibility on this issue…

The problem of course is not conspiracist or racist or crazy posts on social media. It's what those posts tell you about the real thinking and attitudes of the people who made them. And if a political party seems to attract more than it's fair share of such people, it's fair to ask why
