My friend is desperate to find her late dad’s ring, lost Fri 27 Mar on the 10.38 am from Andover to Winchester or 5.05pm from Winchester to Brockenhurst. He was Brian Freemantle - author of many great spy novels and a really lovely man to boot. Any help gratefully received!

Want to hear something upbeat? For the last 9 years I’ve done book tours & noticed (in trains, airports, planes, cafes) fewer & fewer people reading. UNTIL NOW. On my recent tour I saw so many more people reading books. They’ve had enough of their phones? The tide may be turning.

For the avoidance of doubt, if you use AI to write a book, you’re not a writer. If you use it to finish your book, you’re a failed writer. If you use it to rewrite a book you’re not happy with, you’re a writer who cheats. Spell-checking? Absolutely fine. But no, being able to tell AI that you had a great idea about a dragon, a sushi restaurant and a cowboy-prince, and getting it to generate your story doesn’t make you a writer. It makes you someone who likes having silly fun with AI. And that’s fine too. But no, you’re not a writer.
