The West likes to romanticize and idolize Alexander the “Great” because he was of western origin. If he were Turkish or from another eastern civilization, the same West would focus far more on the massacres, destruction, and atrocities committed during his conquests. Here are some instances where Alexander wasn't so "Great": • The Sack of Thebes (335 BCE) — over 6,000 killed, around 30,000 sold into slavery, one of the most important Greek cities erased from the map as collective punishment. • The Siege of Tyre (332 BCE) — roughly 8,000 civilians massacred after the city fell, 2,000 crucified publicly along the coast, tens of thousands enslaved. • The Sack of Gaza (332 BCE) — adult male population exterminated, women and children enslaved. Governor Batis was tied to a chariot and dragged to death around the city walls. • Burning of Persepolis (330 BCE) — allowed mass looting and destruction of the ceremonial capital of Persia before burning large parts of the city to the ground. • Scorched-earth campaigns in Bactria and Sogdiana — villages destroyed, crops burned, populations wiped out to suppress guerrilla resistance. • Branchidae Massacre — entire community slaughtered, including women and children, for the alleged “sins” of their ancestors generations earlier. • Mallian Campaign in India — after Alexander was wounded, Macedonian troops reportedly massacred entire populations in revenge, including civilians. • Mass enslavement across Asia — tens of thousands of civilians from conquered cities sold into slavery as war booty. • Execution of Cleitus the Black — murdered one of his closest companions in a drunken rage, despite Cleitus having once saved his life. • Torture and execution of Philotas, assassination of Parmenion — removed senior commanders through executions and political killings out of paranoia. • Callisthenes execution — Aristotle’s nephew imprisoned and killed after criticizing Alexander’s attempts to be treated like a god. • Gedrosian Desert march — led his own army through a deadly desert campaign that caused catastrophic losses among soldiers and civilians alike.

If we’re going to play this game… Helen of Troy wasn’t beautiful because she was white. She was beautiful because she was Greek. Elon’s cultural appropriation of Helen on behalf of all white people is… interesting.

Sevgili komşular, eğer hepimiz eski zamanları ve toprakları hayal etmeye başlarsak, bölgede kaos çıkacak. Ve Yunanistan harita çizip eski Yunan topraklarını göstererek anlaşmazlık çıkarabilir! Neden sebepsiz yere bu kadar gerginlik yaratıyorsunuz?

I really don't know much about the Greeks. My understanding is that they invented democracy, but then the Romans conquered and stole all their gods and mythology. The Greeks then didn't contribute anything more to culture until the 2002 movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

@Th_Angelopoulos Oinops could well be alcohol, blue tinted liquid. Pure blue color is generally not easily found in nature anyways, to the point blue inks and dyes are modern invention. Greeks used language to describe reality, didnt use it to shape it.

No, the ancient Greeks really did categorise and perceive colours differently from us. It was not merely a matter of “describing them differently”. Homer uses χλωρός (chloros), the word that later gives us “green”, for fresh honey, young wood, pale faces sick with fear, and even blood in certain contexts. The same word covers a range of fresh, bright, or living qualities that do not map neatly onto our modern colour boundaries. They had no dedicated word for blue. Homer famously calls the sea οἶνοψ (oinops) aka wine-dark or wine-faced. This description puzzled translators and later readers precisely because it does not match to our fixed colour spectrum. Our language and our culture shapes what our mind notices, understands, and names.
Ryan Rhodes ⚙️🧠@langofmind

No, they did not perceive colors differently than we do today. They just described them differently. But lots of languages describe colors differently! That doesn't mean they're perceiving them differently, we all have the same kind of eyes

@Atlantis_Scout @noemonas My take is that Homer intentionally strips the history from the story and shrouds it in myth in order to abstract it and bring focus to his lessons.

@noemonas I doubt. The abstract of the book you mentioned (Astronomy and Constellations in the Iliad and Odyssey) says that the constellations did not change. So, where are the Cyclops, Laistrygones, Circe, Skylla, etc. in the sky? They are not there.
