Bar Course while pregnant. Bagged pupillage as a new mum. Hoping to prove it can be done!

The sweat, tears, and sleep deprivation have all paid off today. I've accepted a pupillage offer and will be joining my dream set next year. It is possible, obstacles and all. So if this year wasn't your year, keep going. It's so worth it.

Can be so scary to ask. But any decent chambers should be willing to meet your needs!

This! I had interviews across the country with a young baby in tow. Some I had to move online when travel logistics meant I wouldn't otherwise make it. Chambers were always very accommodating and I don't think it impacted my chances at all.

Seeing some pupillage applicants panicking about requesting adjustments for interviews. Guys, it doesn’t show a lack of commitment if you need adjustments because of train strikes, illness etc. We are human. We will help if we can and we won’t hold it against you. Please ask.

Until I'm sure my success last year wasn't a fluke, I won't offer advice on any individual applications. But my DMs are open to anyone in need of morale support. You got this!! Go go go! ✨

4- Finally, take care!!! If you get interviews, gateway season can span 4+ months and most people will have to endure it for more than one year. So factor in rest and be kind to yourself. It's a marathon not a sprint.

Some less conventional advice for this year's pupillage applicants, gleaned from my own baptism of fire last year 🧵

#pupillage as someone who marks apps and did a lot (three years worth) of applications (desperately refreshing student room) here are my top tips: 1. Please be yourself! Don’t try to sound like a barrister (we all sound pretty different) 2. Focus your app 2 your chosen chambers

@sophielamb91 If it helps, this time last year I was only just starting. And even then, I only managed small chunks when 4mo baby allowed. It was a successful round for me. So don't worry, there's still time!

In April I offered to provide feedback on pupillage applications for those struggling to get interviews. There was a good response and I gave feedback on around 40 applications. Here's a thread with some common issues that those writing applications now should look out for. 1/12

I've seen tweets today about the Pupillage Gateway vacancies opening today. As someone who went through the process 4 times, here are a few of my tips for the start of this season 🧵1/

@DanielleALeigh Yes, some of my options seem very doable... until you factor the trains pretty much never running to schedule.

Totally priced out of city centre accommodation and considering options for next year. Any pupil barristers out there with a reasonable (45min+) commute? And survived to tell the tale?

@DurdyEleanor And what better antidote to a long commute! Thanks, that's helpful.

@theBarMum I live within an hour of most courts on the NEC. During pupillage I was in Leeds most days which was a 30m journey by car followed by 30m on the train or 55ish min drive. I travel at least an hour to every in person hearing - But, I get to live in the countryside 🙌🏼

@theBarMum I commuted from Cambridge to London during pupillage. It was doable but not enjoyable. I’m not sure whether I could do that now that I also have a baby, but it depends on your childcare arrangements!

The deadline to apply to be my Assistant during my pupillage at @39EssexChambers is tomorrow at 9am. There is still time to apply. I think it's an opportunity to develop your understanding of the Bar and skills. More information can be found at: danielholt.org/assistantjob.

I lone parented whilst studying my degree and working full time. I’ve just completed the Bar course and I have obtained pupillage. At the moment life feels pretty great. Although many wonderful people have inspired me along the way…everything is for you.
