I also expect a difficult weekend like in Australia and China because they aren’t bringing upgrades until Miami. Not because they can’t manage it, but because the cost cap prevents them from introducing new parts before they’ve cycled through the extra parts they’ve already manufactured. And they had to manufacture those extra parts or they would have risked the kind of embarrassment they had in Australia 2024 when they didn’t have an extra chassis. That said, I hope other fans understand there’s no point in spewing the same criticisms of the FW48 over and over every single weekend when they know the car won’t be any different than the last time out. Aside from minor improvements they can make to set up, engine understanding, etc., we can’t expect them to gain performance until they’ve had a chance to execute their upgrade plan.

A few days and we are into the Japanese GP weekend. Aside from James "Vowles Verdict" not a lot in terms of anything new in regards to @WilliamsF1 I hope I am not out of place saying that unfortunately I expect a repeat of China. (I am hoping that I am wrong)

@goran_ratkovic But the new regulations don’t include the weight of the used race tyre when calculating minimum weight. They use unfueled car weight + driver weight + nominal weight of dry weather tyres, which is a constant.

This is not the point, but…. why on earth are we still picking up rubber
Carlos Sainz News@CSainzNews_

🇨🇳 #ChineseGP 📻 Gaetan: "Take the flag. Pick up rubber. P9. P9. Really really good job. That's a strong race. Lots and lot's learning. Solid start. Great on the energy and on the tires." Carlos: "Yeah thank you." James: "Carlos well done that is really an incredible strong drive, good come back. We will stronger the car just keep getting better from now. It's to good be back on the board for points. Really, really well done." Carlos: "Yeah thank you. Let's hope deserves us a little bonus of motivation for everyone to dig deep (...)" #CarlosSainz

Carlos has, once again, criticized the new regulations, citing the alleged manipulation of the graphics on the world feed and the retirement of multiple cars at the Chinese Grand Prix as proof that this “is not the right formula.” Full quotes: “I think in a track like China they are not that bad, because we are very energy-rich and harvesting-rich, which means the engines don’t behave… they behave very differently to last year, but not as different as they did in Melbourne. “I think in Melbourne, Monza, Spa, it definitely needs a rethink. I think development will also do its part. But I’m also 100% sure this is not F1 the way I want to see it. And I’m also quite sure that the people at the top also see that and know that. “When you look at what they are doing with graphics and everything, they are trying to do their best to sell something that I think we all know is not the right formula for Formula 1. So, I’m really hoping that there’s going to be changes soon, because it’s not the best formula. But as long as everyone is aware, I think it’s ok for everyone to not get it completely right at the start of a season, and then make adjustments to ensure it gets better.” “I think not having two McLarens, a Williams, and Audi, shows how difficult we make our life to come up with super complicated engines with incredibly complicated software and batteries. “It’s still down to the teams to come up with a reliable engine, but when the rules are so demanding and so constrained, it is difficult to come up with something reliable because it is extremely complex for everyone. “I have in mind what the ideal Formula 1 should be, and this is very far from it. At the same time, I hope that development and fine-tuning the regulations should make things better in the future.”

People want to get real bitchy about it - My entire point, besides being deliberately obtuse is, you can call any pass "artificial" if you move the goalposts hard enough. Doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it. Almost like entertainment is subjective or something.

🗣️: Almost into Q2. Is that pretty much everything you could get out of it today? Carlos: Yeah, I think it was a really solid lap. Again, yesterday, a very good lap in sprint quali, a good lap today. Not a lot of laps in FP1 and in Australia. I was one quali behind, but I felt like today, at least, I did everything I could with the car I have. I think we did a solid progress as engineering and getting the car into a better window, but we're very overweight, we are lacking downforce, so in the end, around a track like that, it's not enough for Q2. 🗣️: All of those things you just touched on, tomorrow's race, is it treating it as a kind of test session, just learning as much as you can in the situation you're in right now? Carlos: Yeah, unfortunately we need too much help from the others to get points, so we need to treat it as a test session, get a lot of the tests done while the car is not performing, so by the time we take the weight out and we get a bit more downforce in the car, we hopefully can get the points, having learned a lot from the balance.

You know, I don’t see half as many people ragging on Piastri for crashing on a recon lap in Melbourne after “unexpected torque delivery” from an unfamiliar Mercedes engine as I did last year when Sainz crashed behind an SC *checks notes* in Melbourne after unexpected torque delivery from an unfamiliar Mercedes engine. I’m not saying anyone *should* rag on Oscar, but damn, the hate boner some people have for Carlos is ridiculous.

@npmvanadrichem @jeppe_olesen Sports broadcasting is about pictures, not graphics. F1 didn't even have the tower until 2017, then permanently from 2018. FOM are responsible for managing the viewers engagement. 3dp updating every 200 metres (1,500 times per driver, per race) put too much focus on the tower.

F1's new 1-decimal gap display isn't just dumbing down the data. It creates a rounding problem that actually matters. Overtake mode activates within a second of the car ahead. So is 0.950 shown as 1.0? Is 1.049 shown as 1.0? Drivers could look out of range when they're not, or in range when they're not. F1 measures in thousandths. Qualifying, lap times, photo finishes. The precision exists. Just use it.

Anything past tenths would require a companion track map to monitor the cars position in order to be useful to the viewer in any way because the only time 0.999 vs 0.900 truly matters is when you’re looking for the overtake mode checkpoint. And if you have a track map, you’re probably already in Multiviewer or live timing, where they have 3 decimal places still.

@jeppe_olesen Honestly I think it's fine. The on-screen graphics also don't include the tire compound or age, battery deployment percentage, or even the race clock. Tenths are all that is needed to get a quick understanding of the gaps. For more, use MultiViewer.

Shanghai track map updated with SM zones. Can’t wait for sector 3 😁 I think this circuit will be much better for charging the battery than Australia. Turns 2, 3, 6, 9 and 11 should provide plenty of harvesting opportunities, and then there’s T14 which is the hardest braking zone.

I assume you’re talking about overtake mode, not boost. But even then, the number down to 3 decimal places only makes a difference if you’re looking at the instantaneous gap at the OT detection point, which only occurs once per lap and passes in the blink of an eye. The gap fluctuates a lot from micro sector to micro sector, sometimes by several tenths, so we only ever find out if it’s above or below 1.000s once they’ve already passed the OT detection point and have engaged OT (or not engaged it).

@officialmattsny @CULTLECLERC That was an example you obviosly didn't get, under 1s you can use boost mode, over 1s you can't and still, if they round it that way it's still not good, is it 0.900? 0.950? If it gets to .8 did it go from 0.999 to 0.8? Or from .9 to .899 do you see the difference?

Differences in engine mapping is my guess. If I’m Mercedes and one of my customer teams is also the defending champion and a huge competitor to me, I’m going to give them an identical PU to my own as required by the rules but not the secret to optimizing it. That’s the benefit of being a works team. The customer teams will figure it out in time, but Mercedes has the advantage for now.

Mercedes being able to extract more from their Power Unit the regulation change after a customer team wins back-to-back constructors championships is suspicious. The Mercedes does not seem that aerodynamically better than the Mclaren, where is this performance coming from?

Are you saying Mercedes was more fair with customer teams in the 2014 regs change? They literally hid engine modes (shout out to Grosjean’s 2015 Spa podium) and there ended up being a rules change to prevent them from doing things like that again. You can bet they’re being very closely watched this time around.
