Thank you to anybody and everybody that's ever published a snippet of code, a how-to, a library, or a framework on the internet, for free, for others to find and learn from. I would not be where I am if it were not for the thousands and thousands of you.

@simonw The cost of asking the LLM to type something for me is pretty high sometimes. Context switching between English and code, and from writing to review and back, and the reduced clarity of thought from doing so. Or I can write it myself and get exactly what I want the first time.

I still sometimes see people saying "if you know how to write the code, it's faster to write it yourself" I'd argue the exact opposite: if you know how to write it, you gain nothing from doing the typing yourself - outsource that to a coding agent!

There's a difference between USING a tool to create something and REPLACING your role in creating that thing with the output of the tool. A CNC does not replace the role of a machinist. Static analysis tools do not replace the role of structural engineers. My work product is quality software that has been architected and engineered to a high standard, commensurate with my experience. An LLM's output may look identical to a layperson, but that does not make it a reasonable substitute.

@clodoan @anothercohen If the point is code quality, and you don't see the issue with it looking AI generated, you've already lost. The tells of AI generated code are effectively entirely due to it being low quality. Besides, it's distracting and makes others doubt that it's sound.

@anothercohen I agree with this but I wonder what’s the problem with things looking like AI. If AI use is encouraged, why make people spend time afterwards hiding the traces of AI? If the point is the code quality, does this really matter?

A question for those very familiar with AI, photoshop, or both: what are your thoughts on the just-released McConnell photo? This is a serious query; I've no set feelings of my own. I've heard folks talk about a white "halo" around his finger, but I want to hear from the experts.

@miss_thats @SethAbramson You just shared a totally different image. Not sure if you created it or you saw it somewhere and didn't think to zoom into the original to see what it showed. This looks like a bad AI upscaling of the original.

If anyone has the original McConnell photo, I'd be delighted to run it through our photo forensics software (Tungstene) -- although I have no real doubts about it.

@ArmsControlWonk The original photo was taken in 2023 when McConnell was in hospital for broken rib. They photoshopped (badly) the newspaper to make it seem current
