For Black History Month, I wanted to make a post about Ernie Davis, a player most Washington fans probably aren’t familiar with. He was the first black player to ever win the Heisman Trophy in 1961. Redskins founder and owner George Preston Marshall was a well-known racist who wanted to keep the team entirely white, making Washington the last NFL team to integrate. He was told to sign a black player before the start of the 1962 season or the team’s 30-year lease on D.C. Stadium would be revoked. Marshall couldn’t bring himself to draft a black player, so the decision was left to Bill McPeak, the team’s head coach and general manager, who drafted Davis with the first overall pick in the 1962 NFL Draft. Davis had no intention to play for Washington under Marshall, so he was immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns. Washington received Bobby Mitchell and Leroy Jackson in exchange. On May 18, 1963, Davis died of leukemia at age 23, before ever getting to play in an NFL game
