The US manufacturing sector has rarely been this weak:
The ISM Manufacturing PMI Index fell -0.3 points in December, to 47.9, the lowest since October 2024.
This marks the 10th consecutive monthly contraction.
Only 11% of industries reported growth, the 2nd-lowest reading since April 2009, down from 39% a year ago.
New orders came in at 47.7, remaining in contraction for the 4th-consecutive month.
Inventories fell -3.7 points, to 45.2, the fastest drawdown since October 2024, indicating firms are relying on existing stockpiles to satisfy tepid demand rather than placing new orders.
Employment rose +0.9 points, to 44.9, posting its 11th consecutive monthly contraction.
US manufacturing is in trouble.
