If you could make $50 from someone who loves your product, or $5 each from 10 who barely care that it exists – which would you choose? Controversial opinion: too many health tech companies in Canada try going B2B. I've seen dozens of virtual care companies in Canada, and I see the same story almost every time: increasing or total focus on B2B (employers, insurance, health authorities). More than that, I see / hear almost all investors pushing companies in the same direction: "larger contract sizes are more attractive" and "D2C is too hard, you will not survive." It's so predictable, but the data just doesn't support this model. B2B sales cycles are longer, and contracts don't expand as predicted, so payback periods are almost invariably unattractive. Then activation and engagement are way lower than consumer direct, and – worst – you don't have a direct relationship with the end user, making UX diagnosis fraught and actions to drive activation and retention very difficult. So? Go direct and own the relationship. If people don't want to pay, understand why. Understand why they decide to engage or not, and (most importantly) operate with a way tighter feedback loop to learn from. You want to know as quickly as possible: whether, why, and for whom the product is fundamentally valuable. Better to get to an answer sooner rather than later, so go D2C and face the facts. Companies who do this well are the ones that shine. Convince me I'm wrong!
