People often think that the pull of IHOPKC was primarily theological. ("Forerunner message," etc.") There's some truth to that, but many people don't understand that for many years (especially ca. 2008-2012) the creativity/quality of musicians at IHOPKC was unmatched in the entire Charismatic world. People were doing things musically in the prayer room that you weren't "allowed" to do in normal churches. There were wild jazz sets with double basses and trombones, there were full-on electronica sets, there were folk/blues sets. Many of us were just as attracted by the artistry of the prayer room as we were by the theology. Every single huge worship ministry today is copying what IHOPKC innovated almost two decades ago. To this day, many former IHOPKC musicians are still the most in-demand touring musicians in the Christian world. It wasn't just about a message, it was about an aesthetic and a sense of belonging that many artists felt. The prayer room was a canvas for many to create and express their love for God, regardless of how that space was twisted and wrecked by evil men.

@DavidFish7 If you were full time on a worship team you were playing a minimum of 12 hours a week with the same team. It made for some very good chemistry among musicians.

Few Christians are aware of the profound influence the the Grateful Dead has had on contemporary christian worship music—including IHOP. The Dead's trademark improvisational jam style can be traced directly from the Jesus People to Calvary Chapel to the Vineyard to IHOP, etc. I've been waiting years for the perfect moment to drop this bit of trivia.

@Lightheart21521 @DavidFish7 it’s all about unwinding the overspiritualization that those spaces cultivated and just letting it be the music. that language still translates and the instincts or muscles worked playing are just as applicable to other musical contexts. it’s a journey for sure

So this is my question, how do we continue to engage? On one hand, what he says is often horrendous and deserves to be called out. On the other, doing so *directly* could very well benefit him. Do we:

He doesn’t care about the context. He does not care about victims or the complicated history we’ve shared with the place he helped burn down. He is probably doing this for money. Perhaps it’s part of selling his services, showing what his online engagement is like as a spokesperson. Clients might not look at the content, but they’ll surely look at the numbers.

@JenniferVerdery after reading the report some years ago, it appears God gave Ernie mind, intellect AND discernment…. so much so that whatever fear was struck in Mike caused him to refer to folks who spoke ill of him, God defending him and bad things happening to ones that spoke against him

I didn’t *actually* read the Gruen report until october. Lesson learned: Even people you trust and love shouldn’t be the ones to make decisions for you. Do your own research, God gave us minds and intellect. And discernment. #ihopkc #ihopkctoo
