@Jackex @theory_dance @Nerdcognito And right before in that tweet I mention when it's sprung upon players without prior discussion. When you discuss and everyone agrees then they know, or at least were warned, the roll doesn't guarantee success and the possibility is no longer implied by default.

@thebobing @theory_dance @Nerdcognito People don't always remember things, hence the upset. He is rolling so I should stop him? I didn't ask him to roll, he just did. Should I yell at him and say, stop, no rolling. Get over it, DND players are really weird about this and about what should happen.

@thebobing @theory_dance @Nerdcognito They were told at the start of the campaign what rules were used. Warning was given that it seemed impossible to. They still wanted to roll despite the guy with lock pick skill being just outside.

@Jackex @theory_dance @Nerdcognito As for their skill values, you can always ask what their bonus is before it gets to the point of rolling. "Hey, what's your modifier?" "+2" "no need to roll, the DC for this lock is higher than you can roll". Seems like a pretty simple solution.

@Jackex @theory_dance @Nerdcognito In that situation it's fine because they roll just for fun knowing it's impossible. However, if you just tell them to roll with no warning they then roll a nat 20 and get excited, only to be told the roll didn't matter, it's kind of messed up. You gave them them hope for success.

@Jackex @theory_dance @Nerdcognito The problem isn't the idea of something being impossible for a character. It's the idea of allowing them to roll, implying that it is possible, then informing them they just wasted their own and everyone else's time by rolling to begin with.

@theory_dance @Nerdcognito Natural 20 does not always succeed. The best has a key they are supposed to retrieve or given they don't attempt to get it they can try and unlock. If you think a 20 should be always succeed, especially from a character and class who knows nothing about pick locks that a bad DM
