This one sentence by Leo Tolstoy contains more practical wisdom than 100 self-help books: "A man on a thousand-mile walk has to forget his goal and say to himself every morning, ‘Today I’m going to cover twenty-five miles and then rest up and sleep.’"

I was listening to a podcast in which Toni Morrison spoke about her experience as a writer; how The Bluest Eye, her debut novel, came into being because she could not find a book that articulated the very thing she longed to read. So she wrote it herself. A conversation with her own interior. I found that deeply compelling, and it settled in me the way only true things do. Writing, like any form of creative expression, must issue from a helpless, almost involuntary compulsion. A seizure of the spirit, if you will. I am convinced that it cannot be engineered toward an audience. Art that begins by asking who will receive this? has already betrayed itself, because it has mistaken the fruit for the root. Creation at its most honest, observes a natural order: conception must precede birth. You do not decide to carry something into the world and then manufacture the seed. The raw and ungovernable urgency comes first, and it’s always indifferent to applause. That distinction between what you are driven to create and what you are performing for consumption, is the whole difference between art and its convincing counterfeit.

How come it’s “I can’t relate to him” when it’s a black character but whenever we play games with other races other than our own we can still be fully immersed and connect to the characters and their story?? 🤔
