@bookafiction I think I’m just a fast reader 😭 I don’t actually read that much compared to a lot of people on here, usually six books a month at most. I’m quite busy too, but whenever I do get some free time, especially on weekends with no plans, I can spend the whole day reading!

Finished Memory, Sorrow and Thorn… wow. The last 200 pages were actually insane, but honestly the whole journey through was something special. Proper review incoming because I have A LOT to say, and I still need to write my Warhost of Vastmark review too 😭

A spoiler-free review of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams 🗡️ I think what surprised me most is how attached I became to Osten Ard. MST is slow, huge, occasionally frustrating, but also one of the most rewarding fantasy series I have read. 🧵

@MCahoon_Author Exactly! It definitely asks for patience, but the payoff made the slower parts feel so worth it. I really wish more people talked about it alongside the bigger modern fantasy classics

@minncoma Great breakdown of the series and its strong points! MST is one of those series that requires investment but offers high rewards for those patient enough to stick with it. A true modern classic that deserves all the hype it gets and more!

I actually am getting more pissed off the longer i sit on Empire of the Dawn. All we needed was 50-100 pages more of the final fight from everyones pov to unravel the specifics of Gabe's lies one by one. Instead readers are treated like the bi*ch that Jean Francois is. 2.75 ⭐

@TBaggins96 That’s understandable tbh, its a very slow paced book and will only work for some. You def do not need to try again if you don’t feel like it ☺️

@minncoma waiting a bit before reading The Last King of Osten Ard actually helps settling the vibe that the characters aged :]

@minncoma Everything about his story still pains me :( despite their many faults, the sithi suffered an immense injustice, they're still victims even if not perfect people

@0Catapimbas Exactly! I also loved that these books never make it simple, understanding the injustice behind Ineluki’s grief does not excuse what he eventually becomes

@minncoma I think what I loved the most besides all the growth the characters went through was how the books used a structure similar to Lord of the Rings/Once and the Future King/Gormenghast to tell a story with themes involving colonialism and history erasure, these books are so special

I understand now why so many fantasy writers were influenced by this trilogy. You can see the foundations of a lot of modern epic fantasy here, but Memory, Sorrow and Thorn still feels completely like its own thing. Series average rating: 4.84/5 ⭐

More than anything, this trilogy left me with the feeling that I had spent a very long time somewhere real. Osten Ard is not a world I simply enjoyed reading about. It is a world I already miss, which is probably the best thing I can say about any fantasy series.
