Serving as heritage stewards and ensuring we #neverforget the events and victims of 9/11 involves everyday preservation of the objects and artifacts in our collection. Protecting their integrity will always remain central to our ability to safeguard the 9/11 legacy and allow new generations to experience and learn its stories. In honor of #PreservationMonth and #InternationalMuseumDay, here’s a #BTS look at some of the care we invest in protecting these irreplaceable assets. After the Last Column was discovered during the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero, workers and volunteers began leaving markings, mementos, flowers, decals, pictures, and more to honor those killed on 9/11. Agency members also began spray painting the Column to tabulate how many of their co-workers had fallen that day. Because of the variety of memorial interactions with the Column, all the items attached to and inscribed on present a variety of preservation issues. Here you see #911Museum Collections and Conservation staff working together to fully document the current condition of these tributes so as to more effectively monitor for any changes over time. The goal is to preserve the accumulated messages and materials that contribute to the Last Column’s authenticity and impact as an ensemble artifact.

Here’s an inside look at a very special Tuesday task when the #911Museum is closed: the delicate maintenance of the 2,983 squares of the Spencer Finch art installation "Trying to Remember the Color of the Sky on that September Morning" in Memorial Hall.
