Incredible, Craig Winter of the USGA rules department was on the broadcast describing what should happen under the rules. If you listen carefully he says it should be a Club length from directly behind the ball where it was in its pitch mark. He says, “ one Club length from that spot” The announcer then ash’s again, “Is it a club length from where it pitched, does he get relief to the top?” Winters clearly says “it’s from where the ball pitched” meaning his pitch mark and the white tee that was placed where the ball was embedded. The USGA has some explaining to do as the rules official on the ground did not follow the correct procedure under the rules and as described by Craig Winter from the USGA rules department on the broadcast.
