Back in 1964, Governor Terry Sanford created the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. The Order is the highest award given by the Governor of North Carolina to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to our state. It was formally codified in state law that only the Governor of North Carolina may confer it.
Yet there's nothing that forbids other ambitious politicians from inventing their own awards based on... well, anything they want.
Last year, both North Carolina State Auditor Dave Boliek and Labor Commissioner Luke Farley invented new "awards" for their respective offices to give out. Neither had ever existed before.
Boliek invented the "Cardinal Award," and Farley invented the "Order of the Tar Heel," which he gave to Rep. Virginia Foxx, for some reason.
Back in 2022, former State Treasurer Dale Folwell created an award he called "Order of the Keeper of the Public Purse," which he gave exactly once, to former State Rep. Allen McNeil.
Is this a good use of their time?

Boating is not a luxury in South Carolina. It’s a way of life. Our state is home to more than 350,000 registered recreational boats and a marine industry supporting over 27,000 jobs and generating a $6.5 billion economic impact. Our No Tax on Boat Loan Interest Act extends the above-the-line loan interest deduction for cars to boats, allowing American families to deduct up to $10,000 annually in boat loan interest on American-made boats. More affordable boats mean more families recreating on the water, more marine manufacturing jobs in South Carolina, and more investment in an industry already generating billions in economic impact. South Carolina STRONG.
