Atlas was one of the most powerful Titans in ancient Greek mythology, a son of the Titan Iapetus and the Oceanid Clymene, making him a brother to the famous Prometheus and Epimetheus. When the Titans went to war against the Olympian gods in the great conflict known as the Titanomachy, Atlas sided with his fellow Titans and fought against Zeus and his allies. Once Atlas resumed his burden, Heracles seized the apples and departed, outwitting the Titan entirely. The encounter with Perseus is equally dramatic, though Atlas fares far worse in this telling. When Perseus arrived at Atlas's kingdom claiming to be a son of Zeus, Atlas refused him hospitality, fearing a prophecy that warned a son of Zeus would steal his golden apples. Perseus, angered by the rejection, used the severed head of Medusa to transform Atlas into stone, his body becoming an entire mountain range, his head the highest peak, his shoulders the ridges, and his hair the forests upon them. This myth served as the ancient Greek explanation for the origin of the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa. Over time, Atlas became firmly associated with that region, identified as the first king of Mauretania, the land roughly corresponding to modern Morocco and Algeria.
