Hello Twitter! I'm Danny, director and co-host of The Ocean & Us podcast! I am a minimally-speaking autistic and apraxic man. I am an avid ocean enthusiast & hope to share the wonder of the sea, the need for inclusion in enjoying & saving it, and my own journey. #ActuallyAutistic

Just because someone is non-speaking doesn't mean that they can't communicate. I can't speak for the experiences of non-speaking autistics, but I know that there are non-speaking autistic self-advocates. If people want to drop the names of some please do so. #AutieBiographical

This was for SpellX, an event hosted by I-ASC to highlight stories from nonspeaking autistics like me, and there are many amazing videos by my Speller peers posted here: i-asc.org/spellx-2021/! Be sure to check them out, too :)

I have undertaken to post a piece of writing, or a video or some other artefact every day from a nonspeaking autistic person who uses words or word-linked symbols to communicate.

@tswhitter @theoceanandus Many years ago, someone gave us a stack of old Gourmet and Bon Appetit magazines and we used to love paging through them. This story was so nourishing. I sent it to him so that his text-to-speech app could read it to him.

@tswhitter @theoceanandus My former husband wanted to be a cook since he was a little boy. He was bullied for it, and for many other things. He did eventually become a chef after many childhood hardships, and later became a food technology developer.

@ekverstania @tswhitter Wow, thank you! Exactly. I appreciate disability-focused platforms so much, but I also am driven to reach out to other communities to share perspectives!

@tswhitter @theoceanandus I liked that the story was published in a niche magazine devoted to the love of cooking, rather than in a disability magazine or a regular mainstream publication. In Bon Appetit, it is exactly where it belongs.

Access to Spelling to Communicate (how I communicate) and similar methods is generally blocked in public schools. This is a human rights violation. If you are able, please consider helping this family fighting for their son's human rights.
Danny Whitty, Speller & Friend@dannywithwords

Friends! The family of a fellow Speller in Canada are in need of help to fight for their son's rights to access his preferred mode of communication in school. Denying this access is a human rights violation. #istandwithnonspeakers gofund.me/e94af590

@mthaw_mm Applied for my first grant to research mobulid trade in Myanmar 🤞🏽. Whatever the result, putting that proposal together kept my head functioning with some sense of hope. ☺️

What have y'all been doing to keep yourself sane in this coup era? I have been making compost out of wood chips and kitchen scraps in my DIY compost tumbler, made raised beds to plant some veges, and gardening/landscaping in general. Having a hobby helps in these dark times.
