deleting my dating apps because i want to meet someone the old fashioned way: getting banished from my village for using magic and seeking the help of an immortal forest demon, who demands i live in his haunted manor for a year in exchange for his help in getting rid of my powers

@StorySorcery @Madeline_Pine Since ace is a less known label, chances are many teens (and probably many adults, as well) will miss it. So it depends on what you want with the story. Ace people will pick up on it and feel seen and represented either way (or I would, at least).

@Madeline_Pine right 🤔 i think adult queer folk would probably catch on but because this is YA, i wonder if i need to be a little more explicit.

i wonder if context and clues is enough instead of just outright saying a character's sexuality in the story? i've got an ace character that subtly alludes to being ace but they don't explicitly say it, but does it need to be said out loud? is it still considered rep?

@StorySorcery In fact, one of my favourite ace books isn’t explicitly ace. The author confirmed later on that she considered the mc ace, and she definitely reads as ace, but it's not explicitly stated in the book.

@StorySorcery I say it's definitely still rep. Ace people will still pick up on it (probably not allosexuals, unless they're very educated in it, but I think that's okay). If you want everyone to know she's ace, then it might need to be explicit, but I definitely don’t think it's necessary.

Once upon a time, there was a pair of queer sisters with extraordinary magic who were chosen by the gods to save the world. Only, the world was destined to end. #SorceryofWords coming August 1st, 2023!

I am begging you to understand the difference between plot and story. Plot is an ELEMENT of story, along with character, theme & setting. This keeps coming up in discussions of AI and also persistent clickbaity "should we include X in a story if it doesn't further the PLOT"

I want to write a whole thesis on pacing and why it's not about action, but I'm pretty sure no one cares, so I'm going to go make snickerdoodles instead.

"What isn’t okay is that so many of us go through life having no idea that nothing is wrong with us for being ace. No one should feel as if they have to cure their sexuality." ☝️felt I wanted to highlight this quote. Good important (+ relatable) article, thanks for sharing. 💜

so my new favorite trope is the unreliable narrator. But not the one where we can’t trust them because they are problematic. I’m talking about the ones that are manipulating, lying, doing things behind the scenes and making plans that fall into place later and I’m struck in awe

It’s been a week and I’m still thinking about what my 14-yo son said when I asked him how he goes about achieving success: “Doing the bare minimum required for the result needed.” The boy is a straight A, top of class, scholarship student. Something important is going on here:

@prosebforebros So much this! I've always felt that I prioritize my friendships a lot more than my friends do, even before we were old enough to have serious romantic partners. I hate that friendships are seen as 'less' than romantic relationships because they’re just as, if not more, important.
