We were asked in primary to write a book report about a book of our choosing. Any book fiction or nonfiction.
Most kids chose a very simple book but I chose Aristoteles’s *Politics* which my dad gave to me because he wanted me to be engaged w/ the classics. My final report was 25 pages because I really loved the book.
How did the teacher repay me? She said it was impossible for a 10-year old to have read Aristotle and more impossible to write such a report. I got a 0.

I remember the first time I encountered this.
The teacher asked something like "what's 3 minus 5?". We were very young so we weren't meant to know about negative numbers yet, but I did, so I just answered -2.
Her eyes went wide and basically said something like "we have to teach things in a specific order, so for right now, just say that it's 0 because if you have 3 and you try to take away 5, you don't have any left, ok?"
That was already something of a deeply foundational moment for me because it's where I realized that the things teachers tell us aren't always the whole story. But if that teacher had phrased it as "no, you're wrong and that's dumb" instead of "ok, you're right, but we need to look at it another way for right now", it might have sent me down a very different path.

One thing I quickly learned as a child in public schooling is that teachers are not pleasantly surprised when you know something beyond what they do.
They really, really don't like that one bit.

The emerging American tax logic right now is something like:
- we can’t tax the poor because they’re poor
- we can’t tax the working class because they work
- we can’t tax tips bc that’s just unfair
- we can’t tax businesses because they create work
- we can’t tax property bc homeowners have it hard enough
- we can’t tax billionaires because their contributions are so precious and also they might move or get mad or give your primary opponent $10m
- and we can’t tax pensioners because they’ve “earned it.”
It’s like the accommodative parenting style of politics. Every group is so very special it needs a tax jubilee.
I guess that leaves … tariffs?
