Reparations for the Caribbean. Just Not for Zena. Zena Stoll is ninety-one years old. She is Guyanese. She leased her family estate on the banks of the Pomeroon River to a British company that David Lammy had publicly endorsed, toured in front of government officials and foreign investors, and described as proof that Guyana's green development strategy was working. She watched the estate fall into disrepair. Buildings deteriorated. Families who had worked the land for years left. The drainage system failed. She tried to call Lammy on the mobile number he had personally given her. He did not answer. She travelled to Georgetown and waited in the lobby of his hotel for three days. She left notes at reception each morning. She received no reply. Lammy was in the country, as it happens, to open the Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre, a not-for-profit biodiversity facility he founded with his wife Nicola Green. Tony Blair attended as guest of honour. Outside, an elderly woman who had trusted Lammy's word was waiting to speak to him. A mutual friend who intervened on her behalf says Lammy told him he was washing his hands of the matter because it had gone to lawyers. The same friend, Stanley Ming, told the Telegraph: "When David recognised what was playing out, he ran as far as he could" (Eastwood, 2026). The company at the centre of this, Pomeroon Trading, denies the allegations and has filed a counterclaim. The litigation is live and the facts are contested. Lammy's spokesman says he had no operational role and disposed of his shares for £500 on entering government in July 2024. Both things may be true. Neither addresses the central question. Lammy declared a shareholding in Pomeroon Trading in the parliamentary register between 2019 and 2024. He described himself as an unpaid adviser on Guyana, the Caribbean, and the company's community development fund. He appeared in photographs on the estate. He told Guyanese media he hoped the company's public offering would excite his fellow Guyanese people. He was, in the language politicians use when things are going well, associated with it. When things went badly, the association ended. Zena Stoll's phone calls did not get returned. David Lammy has made a career of Caribbean conscience. Britain owes the region a debt, he tells us. History must be acknowledged. Reparations must follow. He deploys the argument with the fluency of a man who has never had to cost it, never had to deliver it, and never had to answer for the gap between the rhetoric and the record. The reparations demand is, at its core, a claim that powerful people bear obligations to those they have wronged or neglected. Lammy has built a political identity on that proposition. He simply appears to apply it selectively: to abstract historical Britain, and not to himself, standing in a Georgetown hotel, ignoring notes left at reception by a ninety-one-year-old woman whose land a company bearing his endorsement is accused of ruining. Lammy told Parliament that Britain owes Caribbean nations a debt of conscience. He told the Guyanese press that a British company he was advising would make Guyana the breadbasket of the Caribbean. A predator has been found guilty of subjecting a teenage girl to a prolonged' sexual assault on a Southend to London train. Abdulmanon Aliev, 50, subjected the girl to an "abhorrent" sexual assault as she travelled by train to London in June of last year, the British Transport Police (BTP) said. On Thursday, jurors at Inner London Crown Court found Aliev guilty of two counts of assault by penetration, three counts of sexual assault and attempted rape. Aliev- who is originally from Tajikistan but is now living on Rye Lane, South London - will be sentenced at Inner Jondon Crown Court on June 17.
