People love to say Ronaldo had a head start and has played more games, but let’s stick to the facts. By the time Messi entered senior football, Ronaldo had scored just 19 career goals. Nineteen. There were multiple periods where it genuinely looked like he would overtake Ronaldo. He never did. Every time Messi closed the gap, Ronaldo found another level. He reinvented himself from an explosive winger into one of the deadliest finishers the sport has ever seen. He kept scoring in Portugal, England, Spain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia. Different leagues. Different teammates. Different systems. Same outcome. Messi had every opportunity to erase a 19-goal deficit. The reason he never passed Ronaldo isn’t because the gap was too big. It’s because Ronaldo was simply too good.
