When times are tough we often see the very best of Australians but sadly we also witness the very, very worst and it doesn’t get much worse than this. Farmers are being robbed of diesel from their properties and vehicles amid a global fuel crisis that is forcing many to consider selling off some of their animals to survive. Several farmers in regional Victoria said they were now being forced to drive all of their equipment up to their homes each night – as far as 30 minutes away from their crops and animals – to guard against thieves. Krowera farmer Shane Uren revealed he had 250 litres stolen from a tractor about 2am on Friday and was now resorting to sleeping in a caravan on the property. “I couldn’t believe it, 250 litres just gone like that,” Mr Uren said. “With the price of diesel a tractor is costing $1000 a day to fill up, $1000 for a day’s work.
