Do you remember Nigeria’s 2007 U-17 team that won the U-17 World Cup under late coach Yemi Tella?
The team had players like Chrisantus Macauley, Rabiu Ibrahim, Dele Ajiboye, Lookman Haruna, Ganiyu Oseni, etc.
One prominent member of that team is Joshua Daniel, he wore the no. 6 shirt.
Daniel, from Kaduna state was a player for Niger Tornadoes in the Nigerian league. A fearless defender, strong, composed, and full of promise, he was part of that 2007 generation that represented hope for Nigerian football. Like many of his teammates, he stood on the brink of something extraordinary, European scouts were watching, opportunities were opening, and the dream of playing at the highest level was within reach. Atletico Madrid was one of the many teams that wanted him.
One fateful day, he was on his way to honoring a national team call-up and he left his base in Minna. But he never got to his destination.
A car accident left Daniel Joshua with a severe spinal cord injury. In an instant, the rising footballer who once chased glory on the pitch became bedridden, treatment after treatment, hospital after hospital, but he never got up to return to the game he truly loved.
For years, he has remained confined to the bed in Kaduna, battling not just the physical pain but the silence that came after the applause faded. Niger State Government at the time stepped in to fund parts of his treatment. But like many stories of fallen athletes, the help gradually disappeared.
The Nigeria Football Federation came in with some assistance but they were minimal compared to the scale of his needs. The system that once celebrated his potential could not sustain his recovery.
With all that was going on, Daniel was trying to move on and live life. In December 2023, Daniel got married to his heartthrob who stayed faithful to him through thick and thin. Only God will bless @MrMowiz. He never left Daniel, he crowdfunded for the wedding and helped with social media don radio announcements for volunteer DJs, MCs, decorators and others to cover Daniel’s wedding for free (Frame 3).
His story resurfaced around 3 years ago through voices like @ShehuSani, who was his senator one time. He brought public attention back to Daniel’s condition, reminding Nigerians that behind every celebrated team are players whose stories didn’t end in glory, but in struggle (Frame 4).
Daniel Joshua’s life is no longer about football. It is about survival, dignity, and a quiet fight against being forgotten. And perhaps, more than anything, his story asks a difficult question:
What happens to heroes when the game moves on without them?
Thank you, @Real1_balogun for being concerned about Joshua, which prompted this story.

@Naplaymaker please have you heard anything about Daniel Joshua of that 2007 U-17 recently?

🚨 Michael Olise has gone his entire career without an equipment sponsor — something almost unheard of in modern football. ❌😳
Despite wearing Nike boots, the Frenchman has no endorsement deal, and reports suggest it’s entirely by choice.
🇫🇷 A close source confirmed: “He doesn’t have one, it doesn’t interest him at all.”
Considering his rising profile and huge marketing appeal… just imagine the kind of offer it would take to change his mind. 🤑🤑

Fewer complaints from the players though and zero dressing room unrest because he allows them to do whatever the fuck they want 😂
