1/ Alex Bores now has THREE dark money super PACs backing his campaign. These fringe techleaders are spending millions to get their puppet in Albany down to Washington. See who is really backing Bores here...

@robertwiblin Worth noting he raised the least amount of money of any major candidate in the race since January and also has had $1.5m in Anthropic funded dark money superPAC’s blasting pro-Bores ads the last month.

Interesting how often excessive campaign spending seems to backfire. Leading the Future spending all this money to attack Alex Bores appears more likely to be helping than hurting him. Though he's an underdog so they hope to claim a victory anyway (?). lesswrong.com/posts/pjSKdcBj…

Another Leading The Future anti-regulation PAC. These folks just love their astroturf!
Think Big PAC@thinkbig_pac

He did. Stop lying about Leading the Future. We support smart and strong national regulation (see our op-ed below). You support bashing AI even though you are getting millions from @AnthropicAI and Public First, the dark money super pac they fund which has spent more than $1.3 million in backing your campaign. When are you going to call on them to disclose their donors and release their agenda? newsweek.com/how-america-ca… Cc: @ezraklein (who forgot to ask him about this)

"we need to ensure that key decisions about AI are made via democratic processes and with egalitarian principles, and not just made by AI labs." I agree! When is Greg Brockman giving $25 million to the pro-regulation side? When is Chris Lehane spending half his time to establish safety? Or are these principles just theater for your employees so they don't ask why your Global Affairs team and Leading the Future are trying to trample anyone who advocates for safety?

From my NYC CD, Alex Bores has an interesting life arc. At age 8, he joined labor protests against Disney (his Dad worked for a Disney-owned company, and Disney was seeking to slash their health benefits). He studied labor rights at Cornell, and was active in Students Against Sweatshops, fighting against child labor. He then got into tech, and claimed he joined Palantir because their president, Alex Karp, claimed that his mission was to fight the onset of fascism by helping government be more capable in meeting people’s needs. The argument was that when government fails the people, they are more open to authoritarian appeals. And this was coming from Alex Karp!!!

Hey @AlexBores @ACCass @bradrcarson, got anything to say about this and the millions in dark money Public First has funneled in to super PAC’s backing your campaign?
Shakeel@ShakeelHashim

A thing I have always admired and respected about the AI safety ecosystem is how transparent it is. Even when transparency ends up causing problems, lots of orgs in this space are extra transparent just because it's the right thing to do. That's why I think it's a shame that the Public First network of PACs are not particularly transparent — and less transparent, in fact, than their major opponent Leading the Future. They use a 501(c)(4) "dark money" setup to hide the identity of many of their donors. By @vronirwin's count, there's $5.5m worth of donations from anonymous donors. That seems bad! Such funding structures are totally common in political finance. But I personally wish AI safety orgs held themselves to a higher standard.
