@MikeSwidersky We are the same. I imagine it would be a whole lot of headaches for not much benefit to water them

@thirlwall05 I don’t supply water as long as we have snow. They don’t lamb until June 1st so late gestation corresponds nicely with running water.

Ewes are making it through the winter. Driving and unrolling bales is getting a bit tougher.

Next chance at some rain arrives tomorrow PM/ Sunday AM Scattered showers/ storms are expected to move through the region from west to east As has been the case for the last 2 months, some will see rain while others don't Heaviest amounts will likely be across SW #Ontario (locally) as rain will weaken as it tracks east Will update later today #OnWX #ONStorm

@SteveTwynstra Not sure. It doesn't give the amounts of rain. But I find is generally pretty accurate for probability and timing.

@thirlwall05 Isn’t that the one that tracks your location 24/7? And favourite temp colour is shades of red? Loll

Watching #weathernetwork ai algo change the next 3 hourly rainfall forecast 4 times in the last 3 minutes locally has me pining for some lost degree of accuracy and stability…it’s become a sad parody of past glory. What has the X-verse found as a MUCH better replacement??

@MikeSwidersky This is the end of March vs now. Last photo is April roll outs which I'm not keen on at the moment.

@thirlwall05 This is what most of the winter feeding areas look like. For spring feeding I keep the sheep fairly tight. If they are given the chance to hunt for grass they can really loose body condition.

@MikeSwidersky Yea the stuff we rolled out even the end of March is basically gone.. had to switch to the hill top pasture for muddy season. Maybe we will reduce the area for them next year. Think we will start grazing next week. Appreciate that thanks Mike!

@MikeSwidersky Ok same here, trying to let the pastures grow a bit more.. our ewes are wasting a lot of hay now though. Just want to eat 1/2in of gras that grew overnight.

@thirlwall05 I am still unrolling bales for a few more days. I don’t do anything with the residue. I will share some pictures tomorrow.

If you're interested in learning more about grain merchandising and basis "trading", I made a few videos on the topic a while back. They aren't public but if reply to this tweet (with anything), I'll DM you the links to the videos! (You must be following me for me to DM you)

@cropdoc2 Was it/is still worth spraying waterlogged beans with fungicide Dave? Obviously there has been excellent conditions for white mould, but a lower yield environment and lots of air flow through the canopy..

Soybean recovered a wee bit from waterlogging a few weeks ago. Using my dog for reference -- compare the once-waterlogged to areas over tile a few feet away. Research shows yield decreases +/-50% if waterlogged 7 d during the early R-stages. Seems about right in these field observations. In the 2 bottom photos, note the health of the canopy, and the light hitting the ground, in the once-waterlogged compared to the healthy non-waterlogged canopy a few feet away.

@michelle_durnin Michelle is there a difference in the feed volume or quality between rye and triticale? Just curious why one is preferred over the other.

Rye (first two photos) is now in full flag and starting to be cut before too much lodging happens. Triticale (last photo) is a solid week or so behind the rye. Flag leaf not quite poking through yet. That’s going to take us to roughly May 24th harvest at the earliest locally

Great field visit with the dairy team at @GrandValley discussing staging, management, and feeding of winter cereals. Flag leaf is emerging on the Sept planted rye fields locally. From left to right: sept planted triticale, ryegrass, oct planted rye, sept planted rye.
