A hugely underrated aspect of the Dune universe's appeal is how Frank Herbert built a world where people zip around the galaxy in spaceships but then fight each other with swords and knives. It makes everything 50 percent cooler than a world of ray guns and robots.

On the subject of player agency. I am MOSTLY all for it. But if you're all set up to play Keep on the Borderlands, and one player decides his character's greatest desire is to open a shawarma stand right now, he's a dickhead and should be treated as such. It's a game of heroic fantasy. If you're not here to do heroic shit, get out.

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.

@tszzl Timothée Chalamet was very good in The King, which was certainly an indication that he could pull off Paul.

the dune movies were doomed from the start to be good and not great due to the casting of chalamet as paul. he does not have the gravitas for a child-god and is much better suited for kind of silly coming of age movies

True. Few authors can paint a vivid picture of a character in a few words as well as McCarthy. His characters are like he captured a living, breathing person. You can almost smell their breath, see the wrinkles in their face, and sense their inner thoughts through the glint in their eye.

Cormac McCarthy is a good metric for how well you can read—it’s not the faux literary fluff that gets praised today, but it’s also not readily apparent to the reader. So much is said in what is unsaid, so you have to really read. For example:

@christopherrufo I'm a huge Cormac McCarthy fan, and The Road is too bleak for me. Definitely not where I'd recommend starting with his work. All the Pretty Horses has the humanity you are looking for. Incredible work of literature. I'd start there.
