The chance of getting from here to here is about 1%. The chance of finishing it from there is 12%. Multiply them together - you get a total chance of just 0.12%. One in 800. Ridiculous.

At start of this season, Ruben Amorim had 3 key tactical issues: 1. impotent progression, reliant on wide overload, attempts to build directly from CB -> AM, and not much else 2. terrible OOP structure in a 5-2-3 block that combined a high press & flat back 5, with benefits of neither and weaknesses of both 3. bad platforming and poorly designed plays that kept getting wrong players into wrong positions, e.g. Dalot where Mbeumo should have been To his credit, Amorim has managed to start resolving all of these issues, and has managed to resolve some of them, at least partially or temporarily. We’re less likely to press mindlessly with our front 3, leaving the midfield exposed, and the CBs jumps seems much more aggresssive & better timed. There are still dangerous gaps between the defense and midfield units, but it’s looking much more coherent and compact than before. Likewise, seems like we are figuring out how to get the most dangerous players at the end of attacks, instead of switching it to Dorgu & hoping for the best. Now, the progression one is interesting. His solution was not, as I had hoped, a progressive one: bait the press with short build up, in order to manipulate the block with a combo of passing and carrying, until it’s time to go direct. Instead, he started going long even earlier and more often than before, a change that was evident as the season started but then became more extreme. It’s a solution that seems to be working for now. We’ve scored 8 goals in the 3 gamse since Lammens started spraying those passes. In the long run, it would be better if this GK -> CF / AM approach was combined with other tactics, as @markrstats also says here. Teams will fear our aerial & 2nd ball dueling capabilities, which means they will be less likely to press us high, which means we’ll have space & time to build. But for know, Amorim found a way to progress the ball, create good chances for our top finishers, and actually score goals. Kudos to him.
markstats@markrstats

Not a big fan of long balls played directly by the goalkeeper without even an attempt to bait the press. The performance was better today than against Liverpool, but Man United could be even more effective if they combined this direct approach with trying to stretch the opponent

@UTD_Louie I'm happy he's not playing well! But being honest he's a terrific player and this is probably a temp dip in form for whatever reason whether tactical, personal, fitness etc

“Cunha work rate” gimmick under my mentions. It was you people who were hyping him up saying he will have 30G/A this season 😭 “More to a game than G/A” - I mean, if he gets Goals, United win games. It’s as simple as that £62.5M attacker hyped for running around
Drunk Red 🔴@TheDrunkLad

Cunha has 0 G/A for Manchester United He’s currently on 008, if this was Rashford or even Garnacho, people would want their heads for it. Love Cunha, but really funny how he’s held to far lower standards for players you say are not better than him LMFAO

@tactixology Can't ignore the psychology here. There has been a pattern of being dominant for 20 minutes, then an individual error at the back, then clear drop in intensity/motivation/confidence. Playing more directly breaks that pattern. Vs Lpool we gave away space but heads never dropped.

The crux of the matter regarding United, the big picture question, is: is this what Amorim was hired for? Is this what any United manager ought to be hired for? I’m not minimizing the big win against Liverpool. Nor am I arguing against a more direct approach in general, nor against a 2nd ball focus specifically. I’m in love with teams able to find or create space; play one-touch passes; execute fast breaks and switches; bait and counter; use pace up front. And football has been moving in a more direct direction, as well. Since good pressing has become the norm, top teams need more diversity when it comes to building attacks. Just going short every time has become riskier and less effective than before. But it’s a childish fantasy that you can second ball your way to becoming a top 4 team. It’s a great tool to have, but it cannot be the primary creation tool. There’s a reason why teams reliant on winning 2nd balls, playing for fouls and going direct from GK to CF rarely win any of the top European league. It’s not controllable, and what is not controllable is not sustainable. And what is not sustainable can win you some knockout games, but usually not a full league campaign. That’s the thing with going direct too early and too often. It slips out of your hand and, on another day, Liverpool score 5-6 goals through those gaps. Amorim was presumably hired to implement a system - and building a team around that system - which can compete with the very best in the PL. And eventually, with great recruitment and support, become the dominant force of the league. Because that’s what United should be aiming for, right? I’m very fine with using all kinds of cheap gimmicks and dirty tricks if those are needed to overcome Liverpool at Anfield. But not Sunderland at home. It seems to me we’ve gone from trying to impose a dominant system, a long-term investment that only makes sense if you’re aiming high, to pragmatic survival by any means, long-term plans be damned. Which I guess is better than non-survival, but it begs the question of what’s the point of it all?

Premier League Second Ball Win Rate % (Till GW 8) - Man United won the most second balls (135) with the highest win rate at 59% - Arsenal won 90, but relative to their duels, they won a strong 57% - Palace with the lowest win rate, Sunderland lost the most in raw count (113)

@ConfusedUnited Also don't forget that a top team is simply a team that wins lots of games. Style and patterns matter but not as much as winning.

Massive dub! Especially when Ruben is finally improvising — 523 OOP but ~mid-block reminiscing Glasner — retreats into 541 compact block easier — mid-block = less pressing — less distance to cover — less gap for midfielders to cover — players retain energy late game — long ball 2nd ball chaos all game Question is tho — is this model of a top team? Or Crystal Palace? Perhaps for later, now we celebrate one of the better game under Amorim 👏🏻

@ConfusedUnited This is the model of a team that wants to beat the champions. I like the long balls, it suits our players. But I knew we'd have a good chance against Liverpool, I'm more interested in how well it works against Brighton. Lammens has been great, gives everyone so much confidence.

@QuantumFalcon7 @HemmenKees Don't understand why this is so much of a worry for people, as if a team's only good if they tap 30 passes around their defenders. If going long suits our players and wins games, we should go long.

seen an incredible amount of highly questionable analysis of united's xG being padded by losing states, so I'm sure we'll see everyone applying the same lens to this match. I'm sure. I'm certain.

The usual people swooning over this. They, like Zack, see Britain as merely an outpost of the United Nations. But that's not how most of us see our country. Tightly-controlled and regulated immigration with a proper integration strategy is broadly fine. But rapid and large-scale movements of people are often deeply socially (and economically) disruptive. A slick video featuring people being nice to each other doesn't change that reality.

I'm old enough to remember when virtually everybody in the working class Lancashire town I grew up in voted Labour. Most workers were in unions & most of us were proud democratic socialists. We knew who our opponents were, it wasn't our areas Pakistani community who had come to work hard in our cotton mills; our enemies were the rich, the Tories who didn't want to pay their fair share into society and didn't give a damn for worker's rights & conditions. The country has changed in the past 50 years, but my values have not and never will. Social justice for all, regardless of class, gender, sexuality or ethnicity. I'd rather chop off my hand than vote for the right - Tory or Reform.

On the subject of free speech. I remember a mate of mine back in 1980s - Standing on a chair in the crowded local every few weeks after a few drinks and shouting out ' Fuck the police ' and or 'Fuck the army' and everyone would cheer. True Working class people - not your snivelling reform serfs and scabs. We need to bring back free speech
