7 years ago, I had the chance to join Benuts.
Today, I’m in charge of 3D innovation for the studio, and I can tell you: Blender is taking more and more space in VFX workflows. 🔥
So if you work in VFX and know Blender well, don’t hesitate to put yourself out there. Maybe we’ll cross paths on future productions! 👀

Without going into detail about what I’m currently working on, I can assure you that using LLMs in Blender goes far beyond simple material assignment.
With the right expertise and a bit of imagination, you can accelerate workflows to the point where certain shots become feasible in 3D, even when they would normally be dismissed outright by production.
Stay creative. With tools like these, you can almost build custom add-ons on demand for your projects.

@WaffleRefiner @StevenLathoud C’est vrai que ça pourrait bien être ça ! 🤔

@thomasmarcoscom @StevenLathoud Oui c’est bien celui de Joséphine 🏰

@cgpov Haha yeah, my dream would be to plug external GPUs into Macs for real power 😅
English

@thomasmarcoscom Been on a Mac for a couple of years now doing 3D stuff. The minutes you lose rendering are quickly regained by working on a computer and OS that just gets out of the way.
English

Switching to macOS for 3D: what if the real luxury is just a computer that stays out of your way?
Every day, I feel a little more tempted to leave Windows for macOS, even though I’m a 3D artist.
For the past 3 years, I’ve been using all three OS daily: Mac for office work, Linux at the studio, and Windows for heavier 3D tasks and gaming.
But the more time passes, the more Windows feels like a machine I have to maintain instead of a tool that lets me create: drivers to manage, random bugs, file formats that aren’t handled natively, extra tools to install for basic things, unstable Bluetooth, audio settings to redo…
None of this is impossible to deal with when you’re a technical person, but over time it just becomes exhausting.
At this point, I just want to turn on my computer and work, or play, without spending 30 minutes fixing something first.
Am I just getting lazy, or are there other 3D artists here thinking the same thing?
Has anyone here actually moved from Windows to Mac as a 3D artist? How has it been for you? 👀

English

@LzyIndTky Nice to hear that!
Are you able to handle heavy scenes smoothly on Mac?
English

@thomasmarcoscom I’m working on Houdini right now for stuff. I’ve been a game developer on Mac for over a decade now. So much better!
English

ACES is now even more deeply integrated into Blender 5.2! ✨
Great news for VFX artists relying on it.
Coming with the LTS version. 👏

@Ahuri Glad to hear that!
What I’m thinking is that I could keep my Windows machine with the RTX 4090 as a sort of render server or farm for animations… but yeah, I’m not quite ready to take the leap yet
English

@thomasmarcoscom Yep since 2007. And it goes pretty well. There are apps that are not available or via virtual machines but overall it’s perfect. Never freeze, smooth and powerful
English

I’m not saying macOS requires no maintenance, just that overall things tend to feel simpler and smoother.
The fact that you can handle things like .exr files natively, merge PDFs or extract images from them out of the box, or even just right click a video and copy a frame to the clipboard, those kinds of small details really add up. I genuinely feel more friction every time I go back to Windows.
And then you have moments like this morning. I just wanted to work, but I had to roll back to a backup because an automatic update seems to have broken something. It’s not the end of the world, but it does feel like a recurring pattern on Windows. And the cherry on top is those pop ups asking if you want to keep not sharing your usage data.
Honestly, the main thing keeping me on Windows is still NVIDIA GPUs.
English

@thomasmarcoscom Not trying to be rude, but truthfully this is a little dramatic. Any OS on any hardware will require at least some upkeep or organization skills. The fantasy of a machine you never maintain is just marketing.
English

@Jankofukai When it comes to running really heavy 3D scenes, you’re definitely glad to have a big Windows machine. But honestly, with experience, I’ve realized that 95% of 3D scenes don’t actually require that kind of power
English

@thomasmarcoscom I've been on macOS for 20+ years; those rare moments I’ve had to switch to Windows felt like leaving heaven for a godforsaken planet.
