Devastated to hear music critic Neil Kulkarni has died Having grown up enthralled by his words in Melody Maker, Vox, Kerrang!, The Source, DJ and more, we were giddy when he contributed a few bits to DiS Our hearts go out to his family, friends, students and readers

@matthewcobb Similar growth to the city centre ward in the last 30 years. 500 in 1990, 60K in 2020, expected 100K in next few years.

The cost of freezing fuel duty from 2010 (a 37% real terms cut) is about £6bn a year. If Britain tolled its motorways at the same price France does, it would raise £7bn a year. Funny how we can afford free motorways and endlessly declining fuel tax revenues but not a train

Almost a quarter of the HS2 money, unless I’ve misunderstood the background paper, is going on pothole repairs

@SebastianEPayne Re. ‘ambitious replacement’, was any part of it in the north something not already announced separate to hs2?

On HS2, the critical question was always what would happen instead. At first glance, Network North is an ambitious replacement — but the Government has to prove it actually can deliver it (spades in the ground etc) when we've consistently struggled with high speed rail.

🧵 Today, we've learnt more about Rishi Sunak personally and a fair bit more about what Sunakism might be. His #cpc23 conference speech was striking for its ideological dexterity - with policy that pleases and prods different wings of the Conservative Party.

So, 2 years ago, Rishi was boasting of investing £96bn to improve rail in the Midlands and the North. Now, after cancelling HS2, he's boasting of investing £36 billion. I thought there was extra money from the HS2 cancellation - but it just looks like a cut to me???
Rishi Sunak@RishiSunak

This is the biggest ever public investment in Britain’s rail network with £96 billion to deliver faster and better journeys to more people across the North and the Midlands. #LevellingUp

Our other son started school the day before they were born and had his parents disappear into the hospital. He’s being incredibly resilient and we’re grateful to grandparents traveling far to help us in shifts to cover his childcare and school drop offs.

We have the usual sleeplessness of having a newborn at home but also have to spend long days in the hospital with Jules watching monitors in case he stops breathing, which usually happens a few times a day. There’s v little sleep happening.

What version of Transpennine Upgrade/Northern Powerhouse Rail/Crossrail North/HS3 will they announce now they’ve cancelled the final northern bit of HS2? The important thing is that there’s never any plans or intention to actually build it, just put it off another decade.

Also love that we’re at the point with this country where we’ve fallen from modern high-speed rail to ‘but we’ll fix the potholes!’

HS2 took 15 years to get to this point. Cancel it and announce something new, then you can wait 15 years and cancel it again.

@ultra_wimp The new T2 at Manchester is much nicer than T1, I just wish SAS would move to T2 for when I have to go to Stockholm

It’s remarkable how much less pleasant Manchester airport is than Birmingham (unfortunately it’s where SAS flys from in the Midlands/North).
