If you're one of the Border Patrol agents I've spent months making videos of & you want to talk about any of this, I'm mlm335.27 on Signal, mlm335 on Telegram, or mandawritesthings at proton dot me. I'll protect your identity, and I won't flinch when I see you in the next city.

Wow. Per @priscialva, DHS has suspended Gregory Bovino’s access to his social media accounts effective immediately. He spent yesterday responding to people who were criticizing him and raising questions about his unverified claims about Pretti.

Such a concise and comprehensive look at the ebbing of the pandemic-era homicide surge from @dlknowles in @TheEconomist, with reporting from Baltimore. Gift link in replies.

@jimwaterson If someone was trying to increase their influence they wouldn’t be closing a newspaper now would they, @jimwaterson. Duh. You’re ex colleagues tell me the general feeling was you are a prick, that sounds about right

I really am almost never on this website any more. Find me on BlueSky (same username) and also on Substack (Notes on Carmageddon), where I am going to start sending out a newsletter with links to my latest stories and some observations

@greg_shill I mean, the "unsustainable" cost structure was fares kept artificially low by law even as electricity costs were loaded onto street cars. And the ridership tanked not only because cars competed but also because cars literally slowed street cars down in traffic

@Boenau @nicksummy @rorykoehler I think parents are wise to it as individuals and the evidence is how they don't let their kids walk, and they buy big cars themselves (and also kids are a small % of traffic deaths). What they don't do is advocate for structural change politically

@dlknowles @nicksummy @rorykoehler If parents were wise to the danger cars pose, there'd be evidence of that. Instead, parents generally fear the stuff that's much less likely to happen: kidnappings and peanut allergy deaths. America argues over Vision Zero for traffic deaths but unites against the peanut.

The odds of your child getting kidnapped are about 1 in a million. The odds of a person born in 2021 dying in a traffic crash are about 1 in 93. American parents act like these stats are reversed. They're paranoid about the rare kidnapping but naive about the common drive.

I very much enjoyed reading ⁦@dlknowles⁩’ Carmageddon - an experience only slightly marred by its being precisely the book on this subject I’d been planning in my own head for years.

@changeurbanlife I agree but I am not convinced this is exactly equivalent. I don't think there are strong cartel effects in housing (indeed, vacancy rates are generally significantly lower in high rent cities)

@dlknowles I agree - but there are limitations that we place on groups of institutions to communicate with one another on price to prevent price fixing. For example, recently there was a major lawsuit amongst colleges for discussing financial aid packages together.

@dlknowles San Francisco would see rents drop faster if they did the latter and QUICKLY

@helenlewis @Samfr @Psythor I mean I agree it is an important issue! I just think the actual details and what practically should be done always gets lost in the wider shouting match

@dlknowles @Samfr @Psythor Yeah I don’t agree with that. People *really* care about fairness in sports. In fact, I would say it’s the one bit of the trans debate that most normie men do actually find important. And obviously sex differences really matter in a contact sport.

It’s very striking how reading comprehension falls when people read their political opponents. Like why is he pretending to be dumb and not understand the point (whether or not one agrees with it) that Vance is making?

@Samfr @helenlewis @Psythor (And, I do wonder how many of the people involved on either side ever watch boxing. I don't, largely because it features people being thumped in the face in a way that looks utterly fucking horrible)

@Samfr @helenlewis @Psythor As so often with the gender debate, feels like another case of bureaucratic stupidity becoming a flash point for a giant shouty debate about ideology that is largely divorced from the actual issue

@dlknowles @Psythor Nope. The IBA says that she and a Taiwanese boxer failed a gender test (presumably for being XY). The IOC says their passport gender is female and their countries have passed them to compete, and that’s good enough.

@dlknowles Oh I agree Vance’s tweet is also very dumb, but it’s such a wilfully bad misread of Vance’s words.
