Anthem is the first time I noticed the gaming space began to change for the WORST on YouTube. It went from creators providing nuanced opinions to grifters dog piling on stuff with surface level talking points that their audience would parrot. Next thing you know you got people calling you a corporate shill for saying you enjoyed the flying mechanics & the prime/detonate system, but the rest of the game was undercooked. The crazy part is here we are on the eve of Anthem’s servers being shut down & I’ve seen several YouTube video essay’s titled something along the lines of “Anthem wasn’t REALLY that bad?!” 🤦🏽‍♂️😭

This was one of the last live service games I can remember where the community at large just seemed unabashedly hopeful. I followed multiple content creators at the time who, despite all of its shortcomings, continued to offer suggestions on how to improve and were optimistic about what the roadmap for the game might be despite setbacks. It feels like a lifetime ago when the prevailing strategy these days seems to be to harp endlessly about how a game is failing their audience and use thumbnails with all capital letters that say “IT’S OVER”. It was genuinely heartbreaking to watch the channels I followed slowly lose hope and stop covering the game. I’m going to be honest, the biggest problem this game had was that they gave up on it. It was gorgeous, handled beautifully as long as you had a computer of a certain caliber - though it had some major crashing issues on older tech - and the campaign was great! It had some of the best pcap I had ever seen at the time. And then you finished the campaign and there was practically nothing to do at endgame. They never bothered expanding, and that once impressive world map they created began feeling smaller and smaller. You know what’s crazy? Despite all that goodwill, they just decided to abandon it all together rather than fix it. Hell, I didn’t even know the servers were still up. People are still playing? Wild. Rest in peace, Anthem. I am STILL waiting for a game like you that I can play longterm.

Saints didn't have WR2, WR3, RB1, RB2, RB3, RG, C, TE 2, TE 3 got hurt in game ... but they did have Tyler Shough. Stars do star things.
