I normally say this, but a lot of people misunderstand me. As a player, individual performance is great, but it’s not enough without team results.
Look at João Pedro right now. Outstanding individual numbers, Andrey Santos too, but where is Chelsea in the league? They’re struggling to even qualify for Europe. If I was him, I’d be frustrated with the club.
Previous seasons after Tuchel, I thought Maresca was actually doing a better job, but they let him go and now they’re paying for it. It’s affecting talented players.
It’s the same across the Premier League teams.
Team performance is what boosts your name internationally. When Amorim was at Manchester United, nobody was really talking about Bruno Fernandes, but now with Carrick you can see the difference. Even Dalot got called up to the Portugal squad despite not having the best season. Same with Arne Slot at Liverpool struggles- team results matter.
But look at Igor Thiago got the call because of his goals plus his team qualifying for the Conference League. That’s what counts.
If I’m selecting a World Cup squad, I’m prioritising players playing for top coaches and top teams - Arteta, Enrique, Pep Guardiola Mancity team, Kompany and strong sides in other leagues. Not just individual brilliance.
Team results defines you.
