You can argue whether it shouldn't have happened, but any argument it's "character assassination" is complete bullshit.
All it does is make explicit what was already clear: He used his family's death as an excuse to have eternal war, and obviously, Maria would NOT want this.

Divorcegate is the worst thing to get happen to Punisher. It was the worst when Aaron wrote it in 2009 and it was worse when he rehashed the same concept in 2022. It's complete character assassination for both Maria and Frank Castle.

@dftaylorcomics Every great punisher writer, hammers into the reader that Frank is not a good person. He isn't someone you should aspire to be or imagine being. He doesn't do what he does for anything good, he does it because he can and that's good enough.

That Ninja-Frank twist with Maria is one of the most excruciating, on-the-nose moments. It’s meant to feel bold and challenging and instead it’s pandering. It says nothing about the character at all.

No, it ruins the character. It destroys his motives, it destroys everything he has done.
He’s just another violent thug, instead of a man with a mission.
There was a great story in the 90’s where he’s in a coma and sees his dead wife who’s waiting for him, but she reminds him his work is not done.
If he didn’t have a good, not perfect, but good relationship with his wife and children, there’s nothing of the character left.
Just another mindless thug, which is not what the Punisher is.

The Punisher: One Last Kill is the first time with Jon Bernthal's Punisher where the creative team doesn't lie to us with the whole "He's going to eventually be the Punisher from the comics". Instead they are straight up telling us that he's going to be a hero. I respect it.

Decent enough short I guess but I’ve just accepted this won’t ever be like actual punisher as long as Bernthal is involved, which is a shame because I think he’s very good in this role, but he won’t fully send it. He has to be the vengeful marine with a secretly good heart.

@TheUberNerd1993 @MCU_Direct But it can be done, there are many terrific actors who can personify such characters and still make the audience fall in love with them. Keith Allen as the Sheriff of Nottingham for example. He had no redeemable traits, but you cannot wait to see him on screen.

@TheUberNerd1993 @MCU_Direct I think on screen, it's generally harder to write a bad character, who does bad things, just because they're bad. It's much easier to give a bad character meaningful motivation, that the audience might fall for them.

@TheUberNerd1993 @MCU_Direct Respectfully, I disagree. Bullseye in the comics is an antagonist to Daredevil, not Matt Murdock. Bullseye is meant to be the personification of Matt Murdock's guilt for being Daredevil, he is his damnation and judgement made man. It's beautiful.

@ti3r___ @MCU_Direct Generally, I agree with you, especially since most of them add details that don't really make the characters better (e.g. whenever they try to add a definitive backstory to the Joker). But I do think that, in this case, they genuinely made Bullseye even more compelling.
