I go to St George’s Park every now and then, I see parents standing in the cold, in the rain, in the sun, watching their little kids train.
These parents most likely woke up early to take them to school, they also went to work, picked them from school, took them to train, and the cycle continues.
They start so early from like 4 years of age. At 16, some of these players are released by the clubs, some of them keep going for trials in other clubs and the parents keeps taking them, parents keep encouraging them.
Eze, for instance, was released from Arsenal, Declan Rice was released from Chelsea. Eze even said he was rejected 6 times across different clubs after trials. He also went up north, down south, championship, league one, the parents kept taking him everywhere. He kept failing, but they kept taking him to the next, and the next and the next, until QPR gave him a chance.
How about the ones that get released and their lives almost become miserable because football is the only thing they knew from 4 years old? They probably never fancied education or school as a whole, just football. Hence, Trent pushed an initiative that academy boys that are released should have an after-care package. You know why, Trent has seen his close friends they grow up together, who didn’t make it, he’s seen how their lives went.
How difficult can football be, when only less than 1% academy players make it to pro, less than 1% of that 1% make it to top teams, what really are the odds?
In all of these, the parents are ever present. The sacrifices, the commitments. Like the Bible also said, “because of the joy set ahead, he endured the cross”.
The risk inherent here is that, what if you endure the cross like many parents and you never see the joy ahead. The time lost that can never be recovered.
The smile on Lewis Skelly mum’s and grandma’s face, if they were poor, they will never be poor again, their little kid of yesterday, just bossed a champions league semi final game. Their little kid has brought the fortune, he’s brought them wealth, he’s brought them smile, he’s brought them happiness of all kinds, he’s put the family name on the map. If you didn’t know the Lewis-Skelly family name, now you do.
God has really answered their prayers. For every parent out there, may your children bring you everlasting joy. Amen.

20 years ago, when Arsenal played in the Champions League final, I was just a teenager, but I felt everything. I cried. I felt sick after the loss… I couldn’t even write my WAEC exam the following day. That’s how much it meant.
Now, 20 years later, I’m in a better place, Arsenal are back in the Champions League final. Same club, same love… but a different ending awaits. This feels poetic. This feels like destiny.
This time, it ends in victory. I love this club ❤️.
