🚨🚨 Paper Day! 🚨🚨 Check out our new paper on the dynamics of the HIP-41378 system, which hosts the coldest known super-puff. Our idea is that the planet is NOT puffy, but rather that the transit depth can be explained via a set of oblique exorings. arxiv.org/abs/2410.00641

quick update: i started a blog! my first post is live & explains the unstable learning dynamics caused by the "deadly triad" of RL through the lens of basic optimization theory. this was so much fun to learn/write about, hope yall enjoy ✨ helenqu.com/blog/posts/dea… 🧵

Wrapping a great week of discussions at the CCA @FlatironInst workshop on ML in planetary dynamics. Thanks everyone! A few personal takeaways: (1/4)

The idea is migration, which both ensures the system's long-term stability and captures planet f into spin-orbit resonance. Our results are robust over the range of reasonable physical parameters for the planet, and in many cases the planet is excited to very high obliquity.

As a disclaimer - as HIP-41378 f is a ringed planet masquerading as a puffy planet, this paper is an obliquity paper masquerading as a rings paper. We have not detected rings around the planet! But we do show that it should be detectable with JWST, in principle.

Very excited about this awesome paper, on arxiv today! @YaleAstronomy's @konstiplanet investigates energy dissipation in wobbling protoplanetary disks as a potential avenue to produce exoplanet orbits that are well-aligned with their host binary's orbit: arxiv.org/abs/2407.03284

This picture was taken 8 years ago when I was an undergrad at UIUC. Next fall, I'll return to Illinois as an assistant professor of astronomy. Astronomy and hockey were the two best things I started at Illinois, and I can't wait to continue these passions at this special place.

In my opinion the coolest result from our paper: we account for tidally-driven radius inflation during the ZLK migration process. It turns out for our system, we needed this prescription for a fully consistent result!

This is getting out of hand -- now there are two of them! This is the second of a two-part series: check out Qier An's paper where she derives the mutual obliquities between the planetary orbits. arxiv.org/abs/2405.19510

Paper Day 🥳🥳🥳 Our paper on the dynamical history of the HAT-P-11 system is up on arXiv! We propose a two-step process involving planet-planet scattering (using the hot new integrator TRACE 👀) and ZLK migration. Check it out! 🧵 arxiv.org/pdf/2405.19511

It's Paper Day! Our new hybrid integrator TRACE is now available in REBOUND, and the paper describing its usage is up on arXiv. It's a strict improvement on MERCURIUS, both in accuracy and speed. Check it out! 🧵 arxiv.org/abs/2405.03800
