Today we're publishing an investigation into Peter V'landys, and how he wields immense power over Australian sport, politics and media. I sat with him for nearly two-hours to talk about racing, NRL, Albanese, Murdoch and his enemies. Hope you'll read! (link in next tweet).

@clothedvillainy I may be unique among media owners that both in my time as an owner of Mumbrella and now Unmade I’ve given them more money than the other way round

@NeilMcMahon @JamesCridland You’re absolutely right - if memory serves, just three weeks of ten in the last survey, and eight out of ten this time around. So it’s a reasonable scorecard of where they are now. My hunch is they’ll find a tribe in Melbourne just as they did in Sydney but will take time

@NeilMcMahon I think that’s my main point on personality - they haven’t got to win over most people, just be the biggest / most listened to personalities by 10 or 11% of the audience

@NeilMcMahon It’s early days: this trip, 94.1% of the average audience chose something else. I’d be surprised if that number gets higher. They haven’t got to win 100% - they’ve just got to be distinctive enough to get it down to (only!) 89% choosing something else to be no 1. They’ve got time

They punch above their weight due to being on the world class Substack platform though I do prefer reading on the web. 🧵

I trialled running all the major Australian news organizations apps on @Android on my Google Pixel 6 Pro. I've reverted back to their websites for all but @GuardianAus. So many downsides to the apps compared to the benefits of their websites. 🧵

Despite eating seals, crustaceans, & various molluscs, Tasmanians categorically refused fish - despite spending a quarter of the year starving. The fossie record indicates fish was once a major nutrition source for the Tasmanians, but this completely ceased around 2000 BC.

Short thread on life of the Tasmanian Aborigines prior to European arrival - the most isolated & primitive human society that has ever existed. Excerpts from Edgerton's "Sick Societies". Photos from my own last holiday there.🧵

@timburrowes "The report does not make any new recommendations to government but provides further evidence to support the introduction of a prohibition on unfair trading practices & the implementation of strengthened privacy laws in Australia."
