I just hit 10k followers on X, finally. Time for a re-intro! I joined Twitter 18 years ago, but have always been a consumer, never a creator. I still don’t think of myself as a creator, but last year I started posting more about what I’m up to. VC is an opaque industry. Sharing what we’re doing felt like a useful way to be more open and connect with founders. We’ve invested in several founders we met on X, so I think it’s working. My path to VC is not traditional: - I grew up on the poorer side of things - Luckily got into Virginia Tech - Started a software company out of college - Bootstrapped our company to a life changing exit - Acquired by one of the first unicorns of that era - Went public as the financial crisis unraveled - Was in charge of 3,000 people at 33 years old - Started angel investing that led to starting a venture capital firm Today, I run the firm I started. Active Capital is a pre-seed venture firm focused on the future of enterprise software. Although technology is always changing, we’re generally investing in the kinds of companies I’ve helped start, build, and scale. We write big checks in small rounds, where we can be a material part of first capital raised. I spend most of my time working directly with founders to help them maximize their potential and build amazing companies. After my first company was acquired by Rackspace, I moved to San Antonio with my three-month-old son and made it home. San Antonio isn’t the obvious place to build a VC firm, but the LP community here has been incredibly supportive and we’re making it work. It also means I spend a lot of time in Austin and am on planes to SF, NYC, and everywhere in between. My son gives me plenty of shit for that, but we’re always searching for the balance. I’m a die-hard Virginia Tech Hokie. I love wine, betting on sports, spending time with friends, traveling with my girlfriend and son, and hosting everything from small dinners to big parties at my house. Life is good.
