@yvanspijk Ah ok, in dat geval is het verschil tussen A [ɑpəɫ] en C [ɑpɫ] erg lastig in te schatten denk ik. Zeker voor leken. Ik zou voor mezelf niet kunnen kiezen in ieder geval. Als de L in beide gevallen licht zou zijn, zou het makkelijker zijn.
@coastal8049 Can't tell, but it is a stress-timed language (like English, Dutch, Russian etc.) not a syllable-timed language (like French, Spanish etc.). Also it might help to apply a pass-band filter on 0-6000 Hz. Human speech is mostly limited to 0-5000 Hz.
IRONY?
"What's love got to do with it" is being transmitted through Russia Military's MERIDIAN 7 satellite!
The audio is very poor as its on the shoulder of the transponder passband.
So lots of students in my course are having trouble installing the R toolchain (compilers) on their newer Macs. Is there a definitive guide to offer them?
Wait am I the only English-speaker who pronounces the Dutch city of Leiden as /leɪdǝn/?
I thought that's the normal English pronunciation but I used it in conversation & my interlocutor didn't understand. He knew only /laɪdǝn/. I just asked 2 others who are of the same opinion.
@yvanspijk@doetietsmettaal Haha ja, ik gebruik hem zelf ook wel eens. Heeft een leuke pragmatische betekenis gekregen. Vaak als grapje en refererend naar iemand die in een chatgesprek heel onbeschoft alleen "ok" antwoordt. Blijkbaar minder wijdverbreid dan ik dacht 😅
Three German reaction words that make you feel like a German speaker a bit.
Level 1: "Genau!"
Level 2: "Ach so!" <- I am at this level
Level 3: "Doch!" <- My 4YO, but only to the question "Hast du keinen Hunger?"
"Doch" sounds so cool but is still far ahead for me...
@doetietsmettaal Chomsky schijnt ooit iets gezegd te hebben als "Sommige talen zijn veel moeilijker dan andere--vooral talen die je niet verstaat". ;-) Al geloof ik best dat Poolse tongbrekers moeilijker zijn.
@rlmcelreath Awesome! Very much looking forward to the new lectures, but please leave the old ones up :). I find that I learn additional things by going through previous iterations of the lectures.
I learned long ago to just avoid any discussion of the type “is this a language or a dialect?”
It just never ends well. Nobody is ever satisfied with the answer “it becomes a separate language if enough speakers think it is, and act like it is.”
@rlmcelreath Just ordered your stats book! The chapters I've read so far (and your videos) have reignited my enthusiasm for science, which weirdly had been dulled a bit by doing a PhD. Thank you for writing it!!!
