Simone de Beauvoir wrote about it long before TERFs tried to rewrite it. She wasn’t just “another woman with a theory” either. She is the reason that feminist theory exists as a discipline. In The Second Sex, she wrote: “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” She wasn’t denying biology. She was rejecting the idea that our bodies define who we are. For Beauvoir, womanhood isn’t something that we are; it’s something that we live. We become women through experience, through how the world treats us, and through how we move through it. It’s social, political, and existential, not anatomical. TERFs say “Adult Human Female” as if it’s neutral or scientific. It isn’t. It’s a rhetorical gate that was explicitly built to exclude trans women while pretending it’s just a “definition”. It reduces womanhood to flesh so they can decide who qualifies. And when they say, “Beauvoir wasn’t talking about trans women,” they’re right. She was talking about ALL women. Her philosophy dismantles the very biological determinism they cling to. If she gave us the language to escape patriarchy, why would she side with those trying to rebuild it? That’s not feminism. That’s the same patriarchal logic feminism was meant to free us from.
