I'm business development. I don't build the plans. What I hear over and over is why the last one didn't work. When I'm in the room I ask the same question I'd ask an athlete in the offseason. What's the objective? Many "plans" skip that step. They start with channels and budgets and call it a plan. That's not a plan. That's a budget with dates next to it.

Memorial Day weekend at the cottage my wife's grandpa bought 70 years ago after he came home from the war. Walked the dogs in the woods every morning with my brother-in-law. Lake on one side, trees on the other. Some of them never got this. I rucked yesterday thinking about that.

A simple cheat code for life is to just be easy to work with. Respond quickly. Do what you said you'd do. Be pleasant. An alarming number of people suck at all of this.

Friday question I sit with every week. Did I show up the way I said I would? Mostly yes, good week. Mostly no, I want to know now. Not in December. The numbers follow the standard.

100%. Mixing it up keeps it fresh too. In my 40s I've noticed my body recovers slower and random tweaks dictate the week. Doesn't matter, it's going to be cardio (rucking, walking, hoops with my kids) and lifting (traditional weights, sled, roman chair, bands, stretching). The body tells you what it needs that day.

Cardio helps you lift weights. Weights help you run faster and prevent injury. A fit body doesn't do one or the other. It's does both.

Watched a pitch last year. Great deck. Smart team. Right data. They lost it. Nobody in the room trusted them yet. The right answer doesn't matter if the people across the table don't believe you'll still be honest six months in. The pitches we win? The room feels like a conversation. We disagree about something small. They see how we handle being pushed back on. That's the pitch. Everything else is the deck.

If sales and marketing were brothers, here's how dinner would go. Marketing's pitching brand strategy. Sales is asking who called back. Mom (CEO) is exhausted. Dad (CFO) wants to know who's paying for all this. Nobody answers. That's many companies. Not ours.

Played 21 in the driveway last night. Me, my 20-year-old, my 10-year-old. Wife watched from the porch and said she couldn't believe how competitive we were with each other. That's the point. Nobody's getting hugged for a missed layup. Bank a shot without calling it and you're a Chache before the ball hits the ground. Closest the three of us have felt in months.

My dad walked up to the bleachers last night. Said hi to everyone. Remembered names. Didn't make a scene. Never has. This morning my wife said, "Your dad is the perfect glue." Took me 30 years to see what she saw in 30 seconds.

Earlier in my career on the publisher side I watched recommendations get shaped by what inventory the parent company owned or what was going to land someone a bonus. As an athlete I played to win, not to have my besties on the field with me. That's what conflict of interest looks like in this business. At an independent agency, the only thing we're optimizing for is whether the strategy works for you. No quotas. No parent company. No skimming off the top of the advice.

I don't believe in Monday motivation. Runs out by Tuesday. Sometimes by lunch. What works is the agreement. The ruck is the ruck. The work is the work. Monday's not a reset. Monday's just Monday. The standard doesn't care what day it is.

Most warm nights the last few years have looked the same. My youngest wants to throw the football. My daughter wants me to rebound for her. Moxie's running between us. I don't always feel like it. I go anyway. The ones still home won't be much longer.

Likable isn't the opposite of tough. The best coaches I played for had standards that didn't bend AND people who'd run through a wall for them. Both, not one. Likable doesn't guarantee a win. Being a chache doesn't either. But if your team is dragging, the quieter question is the right one: would I want to play for me?

"What does the agency you're working with now do well?" Most agency conversations start by hunting for pain. I'd rather start by understanding the standard. The pain shows up on its own.
