@AmericanAir my 8:50 PM CST flight ORD to DCA hasn’t taken off yet… over 4 hours late. Initial delay 1 hour, boarded at 9:30 PM and 3 hours later still at the gate. Can you please allocate appropriate staff so this doesn’t happen?? Told we are waiting for a first officer..

The amount of hate doctors are getting right now is off the charts, and people just don’t seem to get the consequences of it. Let’s get something straight: doctors didn’t go into this field to watch patients suffer or get rich quick. The fact that people think that is honestly laughable. The years of sacrifice, the debt we carry, I t’s unreal. No one signed up for a system where we barely get time with patients who have to wait months, sometimes over a year, to see us. That’s not why we chose this. Most of us became doctors because we genuinely wanted to help people. We started out excited, hopeful, and ready to make a difference. But then reality hit. Hard. The truth? Doctors are leaving in droves. Some are starting private practices, others are just walking away. A lot are ditching insurance altogether, and honestly, I get it. Insurance companies have made practicing medicine harder than ever, and it’s draining our ability to actually help people. We KNOW how bad the system is. We know patients struggle to get care. We know many of you have been let down by the system. WE’RE FRUSTRATED TOO. But if more doctors leave, who will be left to take care of you and your family? We didn’t sign up to practice medicine like this. A lot of us are trying to change it from the inside, but it’s exhausting, physically, mentally, and emotionally. We didn’t become doctors to spend 10 minutes with you and barely have the time to help. Meanwhile, people are using the broken system to spread mistrust: “Doctors only care about money” they say. But when it’s an emergency, who do you call? I don’t have all the answers, but I’m doing everything I can to fight for this profession I love. There’s no other career I’d want. But it’s tough watching colleagues and patients struggle because of a system that’s broken. So if there’s a doctor you’re grateful for, let them know. It’ll mean more than you think.

Life is hard. It is not the obstacles that define us, but how we respond to them. I recently shared my own very personal story of perseverance and resilience with #AUANews. For any who are interested... auanews.net/issues/article…

When students ask me when I chose to do my surgical clerkship, I tell them “first, starting in the summer” because I didn’t think I wanted to be a surgeon AND I thought at least the sun would be up when I woke up and left the hospital. But I was wrong about both 🤓😉
