As an end user I will always choose premium plugins over free/AI generated stuff for support, quality and security. However, a lot of key WP plugins now cost a significant amount of money to the point where I think do I really need this? These were things 3 or 4 years ago I didn’t think about. Some main stream plugins and suites now cost as much (or more) per year as Adobe’s Creative Cloud which obviously does more. Some plugin developers pricing has quadrupled over the last few years which IMHO is why people are choosing DIY solutions using AI to solve problems rather than choosing a paid option. This is obviously bad for security, sustainability (AI generated plugins do not change their code base as time moves on) and in the long term for developers as people will always choose a more affordable option. It’s bad, but I get it.

When you read WordPress theme or plugin reviews, what is the first thing you look for, and why? PS Do you write reviews about WordPress themes and plugins? Share your site. I'd love to see some good examples.

I should also say that same license used to be for unlimited sites, now it’s capped. Don’t get me wrong I kind of get it, but the suite I mentioned is almost double the price of a year’s subscription to Adobe’s Creative Cloud, which obviously offers considerably more. To me it’s raising the price of software to generate more income but at the same time reducing sales by making the products too expensive.

With the price of some plugins nowadays and the lack of renewal discounts you have to think very carefully about where you put your money. Some of the pricing is insane from a small business perspective, you really do have carefully consider not just the original purchase but whether the ongoing costs justify the initial investment. For example I recently got an offer from one plugin company to upgrade my subscription to their full suite at a 40% discount, a really great deal. Unfortunately it would mean me having to find the best part of $1000 come renewal time and annually thereafter, that’s not sustainable, there used to be a loyalty discount. To put things in perspective that same suite used to be $200 to $300 per annum. That’s my end user perspective.

Most of the WordPress plugin companies I've spoken to say that new sales were down in January. Ours were 21% lower than Jan 23, although total revenue was only down 3% because renewals are growing 📉 Was January the same for you? And if you grew, how did you do it?

WordPress news: @photomatt is forcing people to agree that pineapple is delicious on pizza in order to login to WordPress.org. As a pizza lover myself (it’s my main source of nutrition) this is something I will never agree with, so in protest I will be abstaining from visiting WordPress.org until this situation is resolved. For the record I feel the same way about chicken.
