@tippacanoen A DEI award means that those that selected the award winner made their selection based on something other than who was best qualified. They’re not wrong.

It’s so disheartening to see byu fans who don’t even watch the meet complain that Emmaculate Jemutai was named performer of the year over Jane. Jemutai won 2 titles.

@tippacanoen Dillon, I read the comments. No one disparaged Jemutai—they disparaged those that made the selection. Yes, two titles is significant, but those titles do not come close to Jane’s body of work during the outdoor season. Their choice deserves scrutiny and disparagement. 🤷🏼

@bigrob262 Look, I’m not super inclined to discussing this further. I’ve already said that I would have voted for Jane, but I can also understand why voters gave the weighting that they did to the double. All I know is that I will be watching regionals and the championships

@bigrob262 It’s not for the year, it’s for outdoors. So that means no xc or indoor. Jane still set two outdoor records, but the voters favored the head to head matchup and the championship. Valby interestingly only contested the 5000. No one in the sec pulled a championship double

@bigrob262 It’s just how they weighted the performances. I would have weighted the records higher than the voters did tbh, but I get why they voted how they did. Jemutai had a phenomenal meet

@tippacanoen It’s not disparaging an athlete to point out the obvious that another was more deserving—if you can’t earn top performer of the year honors after breaking 2 NCAA records, something is clearly wrong

We should turn our focus to the incredible heavyweight match up between Jane/Doris/Pamela in the 5000m

We can and should support Jane for the sensational grit and talent she displays every time she runs, but we should never put down another incredibly talented athlete

@DigginBrigham Just one addition. Tayvon Kitchen was an all American in XC and Indoor track. He’s also the school record holder in the 5000m. He should be mentioned among these incredible athletes

ICYMI: Fast miles were run at altitude yesterday in Provo 👀 BYU's Jane Hedengren and Taylor Lovell both broke into the NCAA all-time top 10 list for the outdoor mile yesterday at the BYU Robinson Invitational, running 4:31.10 and 4:31.53, respectively, to take over the No. 7 and 9 spots. With altitude conversions, Hedengren would have broken the outdoor collegiate record of 4:25.50 with a 4:25.36 conversion and Lovell would move to No. 3 all-time with a 4:26.18 conversion. 📸: @imageofsport; @westcoast_xc
