I get why kids aren’t racing to get their driver’s licenses anymore. Cars are expensive. Insurance is absurd. Gas isn’t cheap. A trip through the Taco Bell drive-thru somehow requires a consultation with your financial advisor. But young bucks, listen to the millennial: You are massively overestimating how much money is required to have fun. We were broke too. We just had lower standards. Millennials would pile six people into a 1994 Toyota Previa with a check engine light that had achieved permanent residency. Someone knew a lake. Someone’s older brother knew how to acquire questionable booze. Someone had $11. Download every fast food app on your phone. Become a scholar of the value menu. Split gas. Buy a football. Find a swimming hole. Go fishing with equipment your dad hasn’t touched since 2004. Build a fire where you’re legally allowed to build a fire. Go to minor league baseball games. High school football games. Free concerts. County fairs. Hiking trails. Run a stupid 5K together. Get six friends and invent a competition so poorly organized someone nearly loses a shoe. Stop waiting for entertainment to be sold to you. That’s the trap. You think “going out” means spending $80 at a restaurant, buying $17 cocktails and paying $40 to park because that’s what adults on Instagram do. You’re 17. Your advantage is that nobody expects you to have any money. Get your license if you can. Get a shitty car. Find five good friends. Then go. The lake is still there. The woods are still there. The girls are still out there. Taco Bell still occasionally makes serious accounting errors on its app. Your youth is too valuable to spend complaining that fun got expensive. Become cheaper. Become more creative. Go make some stories. Just have one of you stay sober and drive the shitty van home.

I have been in Alabama eleven days. I have one word. It has been enough for everything. I have started saying it in other states. It does not work in other states. I said it in a warehouse store in Oregon. One man turned around. He was from Alabama. He said it back. We did not speak after that. We did not have to. I say it anyway.

I teach high school auto shop and one of the biggest problems with my graduates who want to get into the field is having the ability to purchase tools. As most of you may know, mechanics must have their own set of tools and box and that’s a rather expensive purchase. Many simply cannot afford that and end up working fast food or something like that. One of my good students recently reached out to me and asked if I had any extra tools he could buy as he got a job in a small shop and needed tools. Well me being a veteran technician had plenty of extra tools at home, so I gathered them all up and put them in a box and took them to him.. The shock and smile on that young lad’s face when I dropped that box off to his place of employment cannot be described. Of course, he asked me how much he owed me for those tools to which I replied, nothing. Good luck on your new career and thank you for being a good student in my class.

Michael Crichton is such a fascinating figure and it is a goddamn shame he died so young This guy got into Harvard Medical School and said "actually, I want to write stories" so he wrote one of the most harrowing long short stories, the Andromeda Strain. This guy was addicted to research. He read scientific journals for fun and researched everything that captured his interest. He was curious and skeptical. He thought hard about the implications of technology all the time. And, instead of being a dork and writing a blog, he wrote entire novels warning about the dangers of emerging technologies. And they were great! He wrote a `Prey` about the dangers of combining AI with nanobots 24 years ago. It's tremendous. You could publish it today and it would be relevant. I miss him. I miss technically competent authors who can spin a good yarn while informing the reader about how technology is changing the world. Crichton was a generational talent and we are poorer for his absence.

The benefit is that people enjoy it. The even greater benefit is that groups of people enjoy it together. They shouldn’t overdo it, obviously, but enjoying something is actually a worthwhile benefit for human beings. We aren’t robots. Not every single thing we do needs to be “optimized.” At a certain point you have to enjoy your life or else what’s even the point of trying to extend it?

You can kill driveway and sidewalk weeds with boiling water. No roundup, no runoff, no dead bees. Boiling water works as a contact herbicide. The heat ruptures the plant's cell walls on contact, and you'll see the weed wilt within minutes. Pour it straight from a kettle onto the weed and into the crack around its base.

This was one of the best rides of my life. I felt locked in fight night. No fear just focused positive adrenaline. Love to my team. 🥹 My heart is heavy, I wanted to throw, battle, win, but I kicked when I should have moved and was down and done. If I hadn’t tapped she would’ve broken my arm, as it had begun to crackle. The disappointment of losing like that is very humbling. @JonnyBones and @cainmma came up to my table after the fight. They set my mind straight. Jon said, “You haven’t fought in 17 years? Do you know how big your balls have to be to get back in there after that long? Did you set some sort of record or something? Respect!” 🤣 That’s exactly what I needed to hear from the best to ever to do it. I’ve been in a caloric deficit for a year, training felt like swimming as hard as I could upstream. I can count on two hands the number of times I felt good training. It was physically the hardest thing I’ve ever done taking the weight off while turning back into an athlete. I felt like a science experiment losing 100lbs. Every week the pressure of how to get that little bit off. I learned a little late how to do it healthier but trial by fire. The California Athletic Commission is great and one of the strictest in the world. They weighed me a week and a half before the fight, extra tests and scans, multiple drug tests. We weighed in and they weighed us the night of the fight to make sure we complied with the rehydration rules, which I passed all easily. I needed to go through this fight to implement permanent lifestyle changes and now I feel like this is just the beginning. I can’t wait to see where I can push my body to go next. I’m so glad the world got to experience this version of @rondarousey I found a beautiful woman, wife, mother, daughter, sister and legend. I adore you lady. We made history, again. I hope @MostVpromotions MMA @netflix continue on because they CRUSHED it. Respect where respect is due. @nakisa_bidarian @jakepaul It was such a great experience. Here is a huge positive to modern life that gets no press. I have an old 2009 Toyota, and the AUX port crapped out about a year ago. Went to YouTube. Young, enthusiastic guy explains how to fix it. It is not obvious - involves taking the dashboard apart in a counter-intuitive way, but once you see it, it's a 15 minute fix. There are actually dozens of videos showing how to do this, and they collectively have well over 200k views. Had this happened in 1995, I would have just lived with it. But the combo of the replacement AUX jack available from Amazon and the video of the simple (but not obvious) fix, I fixed it. I HAVE DONE THIS DOZENS OF TIMES. Replaced the control panel of my dishwasher. Replaced the ice maker in the fridge. Fixed a wonky sanding head on my drill press. Mastered a bandsaw technique that I use for my sculpture. On and on and on... I think it is likely no exaggeration to say billions of fixes and skill upgrades have been performed worldwide that would not have been performed if it were not for the instruction freely given peer-to-peer on YouTube. Take a moment to be happy about this. The busted item keeps performing, rather than going to the landfill. The person learning and doing the fix gains a sense of mastery and saves money. It's an unmixed blessing. Stop doomscrolling. Think of what is busted in your house, find the YouTube video on how to fix it, and fix it.
