To reduce passenger inconvenience at airports, multiple stakeholder engagements were held and real-time airport situations have been monitored continuously over the last four days. Regular meetings were convened with all operators, airport directors, ground-handling agencies and all other stakeholders. Operators were instructed to provide all essential facilities for stranded passengers, with special care for senior citizens and Divyang passengers. IndiGo has been directed to ensure timely passenger communication on cancellations and complete all refunds for cancelled or heavily delayed flights by 8:00 PM today. A committee comprising the Airport Director, Chennai DGCA officials , AAI officials and Chennai airline representatives reviewed the situation arising from the flight cancellations, mainly by IndiGo, and discussed measures to reduce passenger inconvenience. IndiGo was asked to update its plan to restore normal operations as 48 flights cancelled today and to inform the probable date for ensuring normal operations. Other airlines were also asked to share their views on additional flight operations to meet the capacity. INDIGO INCIDENT - What exactly happened ??? 🧵 For people trying to understand what happened, here is a brief summary - New DGCA pilot rest rules were announced 18 months ago. Every airline had a long transition window to hire more pilots. - Air India, Vistara, Akasa - all operated normally by hiring and planning in advance. - IndiGo, despite having 60% market share, didn’t hire enough pilots and still kept adding new routes. - Result? 1,000+ cancellations in a few hours. Thousands stranded for hours with no clarity, no support, no compensation. - They still kept selling tickets, charging for seats, meals, add-ons while knowing massive cancellations were imminent. They sold tickets for last 18 months as if nothing changed - Even this week their international code-share flights ran smoothly. Only domestic India operations collapsed. - Customers are the victims - Refunds delayed. Fares for the few flying routes shot up instantly, people missed important events, helpless passengers, elders and kids stuck for hours - IndiGo’s meltdown created so much chaos that the government had to roll back the policy just to prevent the Indian Air travel from collapsing. Govt never does that, it’s to protect from melt down - And the most surprising part: all this exactly during the Russian President’s visit, when the government machinery would be the busiest.
