The year was 2022, and I made the decision that changed my life forever. After being fired from my job in Japan, I faced one of the hardest choices I had ever made. Stay in Japan and work in a factory line, or return to the United States and chase the dream that had lived inside me since I was a kid. I chose the dream. I came back home with uncertainty, fear, and, honestly, a lot of pain in my heart. But I knew what I wanted. I wanted to become a journalist. I wanted to help soccer grow in the United States because this sport had already given me so much. Today, that dream has come full circle. I will have the opportunity to cover a World Cup in the country where I was born. The pinnacle of the sport I have always wanted to help grow stateside. Growing up, my dad would always tell me stories about the 1994 World Cup and how incredible it was. Every single day, I would see the “World Cup 1994” license plate on his white work van. Without even realizing it at the time, that plate became a symbol for me. It made the World Cup feel real. It made me believe that one day, I would experience one with my parents. The dream felt closer than ever during the 2022 World Cup. I remember sitting there working for Forbes, watching the World Cup final after writing betting coverage and tips for the matches. In that moment, something clicked inside me. I told myself the next World Cup would be different. I wasn’t going to watch it from home. I was going to cover it in person. Since then, it has been countless hours, countless interviews, and more jobs in this industry than I can even explain. There were moments of doubt, moments where I questioned if all of this sacrifice was worth it. But now I can finally stop, reflect for a second, and say it was. I made it. And I did not make it alone. I get emotional thinking about all the people who opened doors for me, believed in me, and gave me opportunities that helped me get here. Some of you probably have no idea how much your support changed my life. I know this is only the beginning. There is still so much more I want to accomplish. But right now, the kid inside me is screaming with excitement because for the first time, he knows for certain that dreams really do come true.
