I never met Len Deighton but I loved his writing
if you can find his pbk originals from the 60s they have v funny made up biographies on the back "an orphan raised on the streets of Singapore who worked on clipper ships before turning to writing" etc.

Cahokia should be mandatory learning in schools that Native Americans in what is now the US built great pyramids and a metropolis bigger than most in Europe right here. I think it is really cool that my Ponca ancestors helped build it!

Another way to interpret this story is that Friedman himself has always been an AI: a language model that absorbed news items and spit them back out as conventional wisdom + weird metaphors + the occasional hallucination.
