Tonight’s BBC2 documentary into the 1994 Mull of Kintyre Chinook helicopter crash - the RAF’s worst peace-time disaster, in which 29 people died, including 25 senior intelligence officers - is well-worth watching. As explained in the program, I was heavily involved over many years - as an FT reporter and then at Channel Four News - in the campaigning journalism which cleared the name of the dead pilots. The real issue was the multiple faults with the Boeing-made aircraft - faults the RAF and MOD bosses knew all about. But the defence chiefs blamed the dead pilots anyway - saying there was “absolutely no doubt whatsoever” that pilot error caused the crash. Even though - as we proved - the MoD was suing Boeing at the time of the crash over multiple “safety critical” faults with the software controlling the engines of Mark II Chinooks. And even though - as we proved - RAF test pilots had “grounded” all Mark II Chinook, refusing to fly them, just days before the Mull of Kintyre tragedy. @Susanphoenix3 - who writes below ⬇️⬇️⬇️ lost her husband Ian, a senior RUC officer, in the crash. Thirty years on, she continues to call - rightly - for a “full investigation” into what she calls “an MoD cover-up akin to the Post Office scandal”. Do watch the Part I of the BBC documentary tonight - Thurs 13th June at 9pm - with Part II same time on Friday 21st June. It’s a hell of a story - which has only come to light due to the sustained work of campaigning journalists, derided and discredited for years, and the commitment and resilience of bereaved families, determined to establish the truth about the death of their loved ones. @ChinookJustice ⬇️⬇️⬇️

I’m at the market in Leeds today. I used to work here many years ago, and the Caribbean market stalls are still going. So let me guide you through the wild and wonderful food items for everything CARIBBEAN. It might be a short thread; the stall owner didn’t like me taking photos and told me to leave lol, but I’ll do my best and tell you as much as I can about this brilliant cuisine. 🇯🇲 🇧🇧 🇹🇹 🇨🇺 🇵🇷 🏝️

@thhamilton @t0nyyates Poor headline. I believe Shapps was referring to the increase in the defence budget not the whole budget. Could be wrong…

Are you travelling by @SouthernRailUK this weekend? My friend Lucie desperately needs your help. She has spent nine months hand making this beautiful quilt out of disused kimono silk for her oldest friend's brand new baby:

So pleased to have worked on this over the past few years. It’s not often something this big and transformative happens. Today was a good day for Britain, a good day for our world class auto industry, and a good day for UK-India relations 🚗 🔋
